A great book if you want a cohesive mecha setting

Fate is probably my favorite rpg system. With the right players, with everyone on the same creative page, you can tell some amazing stories with the help of this system. While MvK is a supplement to Fate, giving you a world in which to set your games, it serves to flesh out the system in regards to giant Mecha and equally giant monsters. It helps to tie together a bunch of the anime and manga and sentai tropes into a cohesive setting with international intrigue, warfare, and supernatural overtones. It's really impressive and great fun.

Bought it for a simple Robotech conversion, keeping it because it does ALL genres of Mecha anime right!

I got this book in order to do a Robotech > Fate conversion, and was a little leery of how it was going to be, based on how freeform Fate normally is (not a bad thing, just a little iffy when dealing with complex weapon, movement, and sensor systems that come in a lot of mecha games).

Boy, was I wrong! Mecha vs. Kaiju presents the mecha in one of two ways (fully compatible, too!): either very simple, with Aspects as their traits and their own Stress/Consequence tracks, or as very detailed combinations of individual systems. The beauty is that you can mix and match with no worries of "balance" issues, and the game clearly lays out different methodologies on running Mecha, both at the creation stage and during gameplay.

The setting is very well done, and while brief, keeps its eyes on ideas primed for immediate use at the table. There are dozens of possible scenarios that span many genres of mecha actions, from giant showdowns to human-sized espionage to interstellar (or interdimensional) warfare. Character creation is revised using the tropes of Mecha anime, and it wouldn't be hard to apply this to other types of "dramatic action" styles, like sci-fi cops or something along those lines.

This is a wonderful purchase, the only flaw being that there weren't more examples of mecha and kaiju throughout the book.

I am not disappointed at all

I bought this book because I needed more practice tests for my students and also my little brother. I was not too sure about the quality after reading some reviews, but there’s not much material to use for the new exam so I bought the book anyway in addition to some other prep books. I am not disappointed at all. There are 10 tests and all of the details match the College Board description of the new exam. The passages and question types are very similar to the few tests the College Board has released. The passages for the essays are also exactly what I would expect on the real exam.

My students usually had the most trouble with CR on the old SAT, so it’s really important to me that the Reading sections of new SAT practice exams are as close to perfect as possible. This book meets my expectations. All of the basics are fine – there are 52 Reading questions in each test, the passages cover topics in science, history/social studies, and literature, and there are appropriate graphics. The distribution of question types is also very close to what I found on the released exams. The “words in context” questions are very similar to the College Board exams, and the vocabulary level is pretty much the same. There is a good focus on close reading and analysis of evidence, and all of these types of questions have appropriate line references. Some questions also require students to make inferences from the passage and graphic, which is what the new exam requires. Of course the traditional SAT questions, the ones about point of view, main idea, and tone, are all here as well.

After solving the tests myself and comparing them to the College Board released tests, I am confident that I can use this book with my students.

The formats were pretty close, but after buying this book

Some of the reviews are surprising. The version of the book I am using is the most recent, and I have not found any errors or missing material. There are ten tests as advertised, and all of the tests stick to the format of the new SAT.

Before buying this book, I was using previous ACT exams to prepare students for the new SAT format. We worked through the ACT English tests to get the students familiar with the new SAT Language and Writing section. We used the ACT Reading tests to do the same for SAT Reading. The formats were pretty close, but after buying this book, there’s no need to use ACT material. I also purchased the College Board book and sadly later realized that the tests were online for free. Like another reviewer mentioned, I used the AP English Language essay to mimic the new essay format. The essays in this book are great in terms of extra practice material.

The downside of this book, for students at least, is that it doesn’t give any strategies for mastering the new exam. Then again, the book isn’t advertised as having set strategies for the different sections. It is advertised as a set of practice tests, and that’s exactly what it is. If students need more practice in order to refine their skills, this book is great. Overall, these practice tests serve their purpose well.

Great resource

Lots of reviews of this book. I've been using it with students. I'm baffled at the negative reviews.

Some of the early reviews seem to be spam or deliberately misleading, like a lot of reviews on Amazon. They obviously hadn’t read the description of the product or read or used the book. I'm not sure why people post reviews without using the material in the first place.
The book follows the new 2016 standards exactly. There are so few that do so far, this turned out to be a godsend. The College Board has little material right now on the new tests, and without any history and not even any exams yet, so far this is the greatest resource I've found that has any decent prep material at all. We used all of the test examples and my only regret is not having more practice questions to use.

There may have been errors in the answer sheet, but they appear to have been updated in the copy I got.

If there was an e-book copy of this, it would be even better and more useful, but as it is, it's well worth the price.

Helpful and extremely timely in a largely empty field.

Needs Proofing!

I'm a big fan of Bill Hammack's. His "Eight Amazing Engineering Stories" book is excellent and highly informative. I've watched, I believe, every Engineer Guy video on YouTube.
But this book was disappointing. Someone should have proofed this book - there are far too many glaring typos for comfort - I presume he wrote these radio scripts on a word processor back in the day, and they just got reprinted without reviewing them. The stories are mostly interesting.

Great short stories that don't waste words

I bought this book after watching all the "engineerguyvideo's channel" videos on youtube. At under $4 (Kindle version) it was pretty much free in my mind.

- It is a collection of dozens of short stories from radio commentaries by the author. They are all under two pages long and packed with info, not fluff.

- The writing shows a tremendous amount of compassion, knowledge of history and consistent clarity.
- Yes, there are errors. But in all but one case they are simple errors that are easy to read past. Bad writing would have been much harder to deal with. I assumed that because he wrote them for a radio show with deadlines he did not always worry so much about how it was written down. The errors did not diminish my experience but then I've read lots of worse copy.

The book reminded me a lot of my favorite documentaries by James Burke. It gave the story behind the basic things that are so obvious they are invisible. The fact that the stories are broken into chunks makes it a bit like potato chips for me; I can't read just one.

Fun Little Stories

This book is a collection of commentaries that were initially aired on NPR. I would guess the segments were a minute or two each, because none of the stories are more than two pages long. Each of them touch on some aspect of modern technology, everything from nylon to lava lamps and semiconductors.

=== The Good Stuff ===

* Since these were originally oral presentations, the language is simple, easy-to-read, and flows well. Bill Hammack injects a little bit of humor, some folksy wisdom, and a reasonable understanding of the technology he is describing. I am an engineer, and have technical interest in a lot of subjects, but I did manage to learn a few things from the book.

* Hammack is not writing a history book, so he gets to take a few liberties with facts. For example, in a chapter on the destruction of the Kingdome by explosive demolition, he notes the level of technology required to turn a football arena into a 20 foot high piles of rubble. He then postulates that while 21st century arenas are "disposable" after a few years, the Romans kept the Coliseum because they didn't have the technology to destroy it. Seems a bit far-fetched, but a fun thought nevertheless.

=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===

* Many of the tales, due to the length constraint, are so brief and summarized as to miss the whole point. It is really an impossible task to describe the technology and genius required to create cell phones and communications satellites in a couple hundred words, and Hammack really doesn't even try. Instead he just waves his hands and calls it difficult and amazing.

* The stories were evidently written over a period of years, and some of them do not hold up well. While the history of the typewriter is pretty much a timeless tale in the 21st century-not much innovation, other stories such as the technology of anti-terrorism were probably outdated before he finished the column. At the very least, it would have been nice to have the dates each story was written.

=== Summary ===

All things considered, (no pun intended), it was a fun book to read. There were enough interesting anecdotes to keep even a techy like myself amused, although I found myself wishing for more details in many of the chapters. Some of teh stories do not jibe with other accounts I have read- for instance I have read numerous times that engineers at Raytheon "discovered" microwaved ovens due to melted candy bars in an engineers pocket...but that is probably the nature of this type of history. Nobody wrote this stuff down, because no one thought it would ever be important. I'd recommend the book to anyone who enjoys technology and its history.

J: I didn't like this one very much. It seems like the main plot got muddled down with too many additional murders and it got to be too many insignificant, possible suspects to keep track of. I had to keep looking back to figure out who people were and how they fit in; although I was curious about "who done it." I connected with the main characters pretty well but Kendall got on my nerves a little. I will probably try the next in this series, but not right away.

There was allot going on in this book. There was questions at the end still not answered.

I was hoping for more of an ending. It needed.more, like what happened with Alex and Olivia. Did the main characters get married????? Stuff like that.

Pretty good one, moved right along unfortunately with someone getting killed about every third page. Dorian is hot, which is expected being a SEAL. Kendall is very likable, no whining etc.

Brave New World Revisited

Once upon a time there was a series of books based on the Shadowrun game. Whether by luck or good planning, the stable of writers was excellent, and the series scored many successes. Set in a future (2063) after a climb in the 'magical quotient' of the world caused many mythical races to suddenly re-express themselves. Also reappearing are various magical creatures, from wyverns to the great, intelligent dragons. But the world did not return to medieval times. Instead, both magic and high technology coexisted and the political organization of the world shattered only to reform in unexpected fashion. Seattle was now part of the Salish-Sidhe Council, close to Portland and Tir Tairngire, the country of the elves.

In this comparatively lawless world, where the poor are very poor, and mages, adepts, deckers, and bionically enhanced warriors are easy to find, a new counter-culture has arisen - shadowrunners - people who will take great risks for hire or the possibility of great wealth. This is a fertile environment for adventures of every sort, and I pride myself in having the complete set of the original series. Now, much to my delight, Shadowrun seems to have gotten a second wind. Stephen Kenson is the lead off author and he has managed to do a great job.

With my typical skill I managed to start my reading with the third volume in the new series, Fallen Angels. Kenson's lead character is Kellan Colt, a fledgling runner who has developing magic skills. In this volume Kellan, who is still trying to deal with being the daughter of a shadowrunner who she barely knew, and an unknown father, has started training under Lothan the mage and Midnight, a respected runner. With only some relics left her by her mother Kellan follows Midnight's lead and becomes in several runs that have unexpected results. A mysterious fixer seems intent on killing her, and a run with Midnight leads her to Tir Tairngir, where humans are barely tolerated.

This is a game of cross and double-cross, in which Kellan's task is to find out who her friends really are and survive a confrontation with spirit powers which are far beyond her capacity to bind. This is a classic Shadowrun tale, and I found myself happily reading away as if the intervening years had never happened. Despite being the third volume, Fallen Angels stands quite well on its own, although there are some potential spoilers. Consider tracking down all three volumes (I'm going to) and starting from the beginning. This is a rich story world that never fails to entertain.

You Can See the Ending...

From a miles away. Fallen Angels is the collimation of the opening trilogy of this Shadowrun re-launch which includes multiple characters from the Shadowrun Duels action figure line. As a few of the others reviewers have stated before, the first two books of this trilogy were not bad and enjoyable; Fallen Angels on the other hand can be described in one word, "disappointing."

Let me just start off by saying that this book was very predictable. The moment you were introduced to Midnight you knew that she was going to be the main villain in the trilogy, and after reading the prologue/flashback, this all but confirmed it. There was no plot twist at the end; there was no intrigue or frankly no reason for the reader to keep reading about halfway through the book. Midnight in herself was an okay character, but as a villain her threat rating in fairly low when you have a sword swinging physical adapt, a trigger a happy ork bouncer, a chromed up fixer, and a large troll battle mage after a simple thief who's main physical prowess is that she is a crack shot with the pistol.

One of my greatest frustrations with this book was the description of Tir Tairngire. For those of you who are new to the Shadowrun universe, Tir Tairngire is the elven home world which is located in the 6th world around Oregon. Tir Tairngire is supposed to be one of the most exotic settings in the world of Shadowrun and was considered a Pandora's Box for previous Shadowrun writers and campaigns. It was a country so sublime that no author was able to describe it in words. Yet, in Fallen Angels we finally have a story which takes place partially in Tir Tairngire and Kenson manages to describe it as 'just another slum, but with the elven language on the street signs.' The romance between Kellan and Orion was a nice welcoming moment, but the actual moment it came to fruition felt awkward in a sense. In my mind I said to myself "It's about time." about the two of them expressing their feelings for each other, but the dialogue felt rushed. One welcoming moment however was when Akimura explained to Kellan's friends the back story between Kellan's parents, which I would rather read about then what occurred in this novel.

I have been a fan of Kenson's Shadowrun novels since Crossroads and a few years ago Ragnarock was one of my favorite books, but this trilogy overall has not been as epic or enjoyable as some of the Shadowrun books which were published in the 90s. I was expecting more from Kenson, and Fallen Angels certainly felt like a book in which he was given a page limit or had to meet a word quota in order to accomplish, rather then a labor of love. I have read better stories from the author and hope that he has another opportunity to bring back Tommy Talon sometime in the near future.

About the Author

Julia Angwin is the author of Stealing MySpace and an award-winning investigative journalist for the independent news organization ProPublica. From 2000 to 2013 she was a staff reporter for The Wall Street Journal, where she was on the team of reporters awarded the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for coverage of corporate corruption and led a team covering online privacy that was a finalist for a 2012 Pulitzer Prize. She lives in New York City with her husband and two children.

Interesting read with good tips for protecting your privacy.

This is an important book and I'm glad I had the opportunity to read it. For those of concerned about privacy, it's a useful read.
The book is structured like a memoir. The author was a reporter for the Wall Street Journal. Refreshingly, she's a married mom with two kids. I say this because, normally the people writing about government surveillance and privacy issues are single, white men. She begins the book with a brief review of privacy and government violation of it from the beginning of the republic to now. The rest of the book is taken up with her mission to retake as much of her privacy as possible and leave the smallest possible digital footprint.
She finds that it is no easy task retaking your personal information from the data brokers. We are constantly tracked while online. "Anonymous" profiles of people are assembled by these data brokers based on what websites people visit. Based on the information they collect, they'll present you with ads based on your presumed interests. More detailed profiles of people are assembled and used to determine what prices you see for say insurance or plane tickets.
This book was a real eye-opener for me. I took for granted that my moves online were tracked, but I had no idea to the degree which it is done. Most troubling is this data industry is completely unregulated. Once they have your data, you cannot compel them to reveal what they know or to delete their data on you. The only exception to this is your credit score.
I dog-eared and underlined quite a few sections in this book because she has practical tips for minimizing your exposure. I hope that if this book goes to a paperback edition, she'll assemble some of the more useful tips into a single section at the end of the book.
I think the author's conclusion to her book is a bit Pollyannaish. She argues that pollution used to be much worse in the US (an example she sites are rivers bursting into flames, and that for the most part rivers are much cleaner). Pollution is a non-specific problem like the privacy problem, but people got together and encouraged Congress to pass laws that prevent the dumping of chemicals in our rivers. I disagree. I think people have gotten too inured to having little privacy. I see things getting much worse and staying that way. People voluntarily join facebook and are happy to share nearly everything about their lives (I'm looking at you people that post pictures of your food).
My one complaint about this book is her brief reference to bookstores. "Similarly, I used to go to my local bookstore and buy books in cash. Now, all the bookstores are dying, and Amazon is my local bookstore." If you order on Amazon because of the convenience or the prices, fine, it's understandable. But don't pretend like you would still go to your local bookstore if it hadn't closed. You stopped going because of the uber convenience of Amazon. Furthermore, this author lives in New York City, and there are no independent bookstores left in New York City, really?
But aside from my tirade on this minor thing, the book is excellent and I would recommend it to those concerned about their privacy.

HONESTY CAN BE AN UNPLEASANT WAY OF LEARNING THE TRUTH

In an age of drones, spy satellites, internet espionage, GPS and cell phone tapping conducted by most of the worlds leading nations (and also many international criminal organizations) ... how can we decent individuals protect our privacy? You may be shocked at how little is actually left available to us as a result of this book's well-researched and outstandingly informative presentation. On one side there is a legitimate need for our governments to protect us from terrorism, identity-theft and international scamming. At the other end is the reasonable desire for most individuals to demand a right to privacy and individual freedoms. At what point, exactly, should collective societal safety trump individual rights? As you will discover in this excellent book, there is a very fine line of difference that separates the two. So how do we protect ourselves? The author has provided a thoughtful and potentially well-constructed answer to this difficult challenge. It is one that can work and involves participation from us all. The more people who are aware of this strategy - the better we will all sleep at night.

Should be required reading for all Americans

Privacy is a hot topic in the news of late. This book goes right to the heart of this issue. The writing is excellent. Julia Angwin speaks from and describes her own experiences with all aspects of the subject. She places her story in the context of her life and her own family. I appreciate this personal touch and the relationship to real life. Too often non-fiction books of this sort present a logical and scholarly analysis of the problem that is difficult to relate to one's own life. This book does not do that; it is relevant.

I am a technically savvy person only to an average degree. But I could tell from her discussion that the author is not seriously techie about any of the subjects she discussed. Advanced dissertations on the topics in the book was not what I was looking for when I bought the book, and if that is what you want, this is not the book for you. However, if you want to understand how privacy in your life has been impacted by government and industry, then this book is a must read.
