Best on the topic

The Dutch scholar, Tjeu van den Berg, has written a brilliant summary of all that C.G. Jung wrote about art and the creative process that lies behind the making of art. More than that, he offers a coherent depth psychological theory of art based on Jung's writings. He is conversant with the secondary literature on this topic but does not rely on it. Rather, he bases his observations on the original writings of Jung and weaves them together into a coherent account. This work is highly readable by non-specialists and offers anyone interested in the creative process valuable insights. For the ordinary art fan and appreciator, it opens the eyes to deeper dimensions of seeing and understanding. If one is going to read only one book on this topic. this is the book to have.

excellent overview

I am fairly conversant with Jung and found this book to be a thorough overview of Jung's views on art in general. There is an analysis of abstract art in the last few chapters which are penetrating and though Jung did not like abstraction he made many penetrating comments on its relevance to the modern world. The reader will benefit if there is interest in Analytical Psychology.

Amazingly, highly detailed, classic reference

This is a well-known, outstanding & classic reference in drawing the human figure. It's also maybe too much anatomy for most artists, I believe. If you're looking for a book that'll detail & depict more than you probably need, this is certainly a good place to start!

First off, I just have to say: some of these pencil drawings are absolutely amazing(!). Beautiful & detailed- It's the biggest selling point to this book. Usually it's his rendering of individual muscles here that seem to be his best- his completed figure work being certainly above-average as well. Bones & muscles are rendered in super-clear detail, and simplified drawings & outlines are included to help with artistic representation. It's not an all-around figure drawing book though. For better treatments on proportions & basic shapes see: Walt Reed's The Figure; Jack Hamm's Drawing the Head and Figure; and Andrew Loomis' Figure Drawing For All It's Worth. A highly detailed treatment, I usually prefer anatomy books that are even more simplified, concise, and smaller in size. I think most artists do; there're too many anatomy books to choose from these days, and big books can be hard to frequently carry & use.

Sterling publishing seems to agree: they just released a new, tiny, 'concealed spiral' hardback version to meet this very need. And it works pretty well, if you can get over the shockingly small size when compared to the original, *full-sized* hardback! That was the biggest surprise when I received this & opened the amazon box: I didn't even think to consider this new version's size & dimensions. I actually have the original sized hardback, with its dimensions of about 12-7/8" x 9-5/8" x 1-1/8". This new, tiny, Sterling spiral edition is exactly as listed: 8.2" x 7.6" x 1.2". My 'original sized' copy is copyright 1953, printed in 1995 by Barnes & Noble Books. I've never seen the paperback version. Truth be told, between these 2 versions I have, I kind of prefer the bigger sized hardback. I'm glad I have both though: There's no denying the convenience of Sterling's tiny, spiral edition; and production quality is top-notch, with its glossy paper, complete with its 'new car' like smell(!). But you lose some of the gorgeous detail in the pencil work in a book so small in size. To Sterling's credit, most of this minute detail is still very visible. But if you'd compare the 2 versions, I think you'd agree that the bigger, original version is a bit easier on the eyes. Both versions have their benefits.

If you want an even more simplified, concise, and smaller anatomy book in pencil, try Louise Gordon's How to Draw the Human Figure: An Anatomical Approach. It's a pretty solid, small, paperback work, although Barcsay's effort is far more beautiful in its rendering.

My other favorite anatomy books include Bridgman's Constructive Anatomy, and Hogarth's Dynamic Anatomy. Both available today!

An anatomy class standard

This book was the standard text for the anatomy class I took in art school and it's obvious why. Every part of the anatomy an artist would have to know to draw figures convincingly is shown. And the figures are not idealized, but realistic. They have some fat to them, just like most of us do. There are plenty of anatomy books out there if you want idealized or superheroic figures, such as the Dynamic book series by Hogarth. But if you want to be able to draw figures the way they really look, study and sketch from this very thorough book.

Terrific learning tool!

I am learning to sketch and have this and another book of the same title. Despite the shared name, what a world of difference inside!
This is a detailed guide to human anatomy for an artist at any level. It teaches you both the physical and mechanical aspects of the body inside and out -- from what bones and muscles look like to how joints fit together and move, and what the resulted motion looks like. It also looks at all the different elements of the body, whether large or small, from several different perspectives, and from inside to out. The images are both highly detailed and natural.
In addition, all the images in this book are beautiful sketches done by a great artist. Rather than showing glossy photos (like the other book I have) that do not reveal the same kind of details an artist might, this book shows how a pencil and paper might be used to create acurate anatomical images. I find the various plates in the book not only helpful in illustrating what the body looks like, but also how one might depict it.
All in all, this is an extremely well-put together book for its purpose.

Different Author, Different Book

The chilling story of the brutal murders of three Girl Scouts in the late 70's is enough to make your skin crawl. With the right Author this horrifying story would have left the reader double checking the locks on their doors and windows. Instead it left me not knowing anymore about the murders than I did before I read the book. In the summer of 1977 three Girl Scouts were found murdered, the only suspect was a man the law had been after for a long time. Well, did Hart or didn't he, murder the girl scouts? We never do find out unless of course, you believe the Indian medicine man. McCoy rambles and gives the reader nothing but typos. The strange thing is the author is from Oklahoma so why doesn't he offer any of his own theories? Surely there had to be talk in the community about who murdered the girls in Tent Number Eight.

I bought this hoping that it was like the book I read long ago. It felt thrown together and not organized. The trail part was a bit to much back on forth then the closing argument part was way to biring

Avoid...avoid...avoid....

Extremely badly written book. If I hadn't been familiar with the circumstances of the murders from the accounts at the time, and the other book, Cry For The Children, I would have had very little idea what really happened. The author rambled and switched from topic to topic in no particular order. Much of the writing was grammatically incorrect, and some words were spelled differently every time they came up..(Chouteau, Choteau, Choto)...... I sincerely regret spending $8 on the kindle download, and really couldn't recommend this book to anyone at all. Sorry...

An excellent appreciation of the "old" ways

This trilogy was one I read many years ago and only returned to recently. On this reading it was an even better - recalling in detail a life which has totally gone now but has a wonder and joy in it which we can no longer experience. On having her fortune told - the main character was told she would be loved by people she had never met - for once astrology worked. An excellent piece of literature.

Beautiful descriptions of hamlet living and a time long past

I came to this book by way of the beautifully-filmed series Lark Rise to Candleford (Seasons 1-4). The show is a stellar production with a great ensemble cast and heartwarming stories, and I had to read the source work which inspired the series. This edition of Flora Thompson's Lark Rise to Candleford contains the trilogy, i.e. "Lark Rise", "Over to Candleford", and "Candleford Green".

As for the work itself, I have found it to be most illuminating. The trilogy has been seen as a sort of semi-autobiographical work, and the character of Laura as seen to reflect Thompson. The amazing thing about this work is that Ms. Thompson wrote it about forty years after the events she witnessed. The stories reflect the glory days of England's pastoral life, and there is a sense of idealism in the portrayal of people's lives back then, almost as if these were the best of times, despite the poverty of many of the inhabitants of the villages. Ms. Thompson's writing may gloss over the serious problems affecting the people in the hamlets at that time, but it is nevertheless an important work that adds to the various collections of memoirs and journals describing the English countryside and the lives of the inhabitants of the hamlets surrounding it.

I loved reading about the little details of hamlet living, and even though the descriptions can at times be almost tedious in their details, I savored each and every word. It made me yearn for a simpler, less frenetic life, one that seems almost impossible in today's hectic, technology-inundated world.

I also enjoyed reading about the characters, some of which are found in the BBC drama adaptation. It was rather illuminating to read about Robert Timmins, a strong-minded, independent, proud man who is seen as a father figure among the Lark Risers in the TV show. In the book, I learned that Robert grew to become a very bitter man who never quite fit in with his surroundings, and whose life eventually lapsed into degeneracy!

This is a wonderful work for many reasons, but most of all for eliciting one's feelings of nostalgia for long gone days. One of the passages in the book reads,
"Candleford Green was but a small village and there were fields and meadows and woods all around it. As soon as Laura crossed the doorstep, she could see some of these. But mere seeing from a distance did not satisfy her; she longed to go alone far into the fields and hear the birds singing, the brooks tinkling, and the wind rustling through the corn, as she had when a child. To smell things and touch things, warm earth and flowers and grasses, and to stand and gaze where no one could see her, drinking it all in." I too long to walk far into the fields, and to have the luxury of time to do it!

A detailed picture of a time that has passed

Flora Thompson wrote about what she knew - a rural life in a small village near Oxford, and in such a way that you feel you are there with her. This book was adapted for the British TV show "Lark Rise To Candleford," but be aware that the book itself has less of the interpersonal relationships that are developed in the show and much more description of the environment. As an Anglophile and lover of British folk music, I thoroughly enjoyed this.
