Why didn't I get this earlier?

I had to struggle with neuroanatomy in my first year. To make things worse, some of the lecturers weren't exactly stellar. If I'd had this book earlier, I could have done way better in my tests. The organization of the book is logical, and the content is rich in that the important facts (i.e., those that are often asked in tests!) are summarized in an easy-to-read format. I've purchased all the USMLE Road Map books that have been released to date, and I have to say that this one stands out.

Finally got Neuro

I wish I had this book during Neuro in school- after reading it, I understand the awful tracts and lesions for the first time along with the basal ganglia and cerebellum. The visual defects section is amazing. I found out about this book after hearing Dr. White teach for Kaplan. A must buy to get through Step 1 Neuro questions.

Neuro was not my best subject in first year. This is a great review and helped me understand a few key concepts that I didn't learn during first year. If you spend half a day skimming through this book reading the blue boxes and LOOKING AT THE DRAWINGS you will be well prepared for the questions on the exam.

The interpretative problem that haunts The Merchant of Venice, Shakespeare's most performed and currently most controversial comedy, concerns the question of artistic unity: did Shakespeare effectively integrate his multiple plots and apparently divergent worlds of Venice and Belmont? Joan Ozark Holmer examines Shakespeare's indebted and innovative theatrical choices regarding his comedy's structure, language, ideas, and characters. Discovering a tightly knit interplay of contrarieties and correspondences, she argues for the play's unity of dramatic design through its enactment of choices for or against a complex conception of wise love. Historical contexts - aesthetic, theological, and economic - anchor the play's problems of finance and faith that make or break a variety of secular and spiritual bonds. An on-going dialogue with past and present criticism gauges altering perspectives and persuasions in the critics' performance. Because most modern contention centres on the question of anti-Semitism, a consideration of how the play encodes sixteenth-century concepts of Jews illuminates their cultural moment and ours. If Shakespearean drama can be said to be an infinitely varied experience in seeing feelingly, then the play entertains and educates through dilemmas of choice and ironic reversals that expose the human difficulty of knowing and doing well. Presenting possible new sources as well as new evidence from recognised sources, Holmer highlights issues usually underestimated in the play's criticism. Examples include the interrelation of wealth and faith with literal and figurative conversions, the importance of usury, biblical allusion and the instrumentality of stage law. Takingthe recapitulation of the final act for closure of both play and book, she analyses its incorporative design for summing the circle of the play, concluding with an awareness of how this play fits within Shakespeare's canon and at the same time continues to 'exceed account' in its imaginative reckoning.

Totally LOVED this book!!!!!

When The Chips Are Down was such a fun read! From the prologue alone I loved it!!! I Instantly related to these characters, seeing myself and a few friends in them. Why can't these people be real? I would so be hanging out with them. Beth did an amazing job giving us three POV's. Melanie is a single Mom of two teenage daughters, Gia and Carrie. Each character brought an exceptional dynamic to the story. Surviving a cheating husband and raising twin teenage girls, Melanie is putting the pieces of her life back together. With the support of her crazy BFF Jodi, who I totally loved, she manages it all. Melanie is missing one piece to her life, a man. In walks hot and sexy Ben. I loved how their relationship flowed and what they came to mean to each other. There were a few bumps along the way, and we got to also see the trials and tribulations of being a teenager through the girls POV's. This was such a light and fun read, and I loved every second of it. If you literally want to laugh out loud, I highly recommend this book. Congratulations Beth on another 5 star read!

The witty Beth Rinyu is at it again!

Beth Rinyu has done it again! Another wonderfully written book with a story that will keep you turning page after page.

To begin, let me say-- thank you! I received an ARC of When the Chips are Down in exchange for an honest review. I am happy to read and review anything you write, Beth Rinyu!

This is the story of a divorced Mom who's found real love when she wasn't looking for it and who's raising two twin teenage girls with their own life and love struggles. This book is real life. That's one of my favorite things about it. There are so many romance novels out there that are FABULOUS, don't get me wrong- but realistic? Not so much. This is a book that could seriously be about you, your neighbor down the street, or that crazy best friend of yours.

I loved that this book looked at multiple parts of this family. There were so many good characters in this story. We've got the star of the show, Melanie, who is so easily relatable.

Then there's that jerk of an ex-husband who everyone loves to hate (let's just be honest here), along with his twenty-something-purchased-perky new bride.

Next comes Gia and Carrie, who are so different but so similar at the same time. I love that you get to read about their life, the struggles each one of them face as they go through those dreaded high school years, but also their hope for the future.

Then there's the boys.... we've got Jason, Daniel, and Cam.

Jason-- I mean, seriously? How could you not love him?

After Jason finally gets rid of that horrible girl he's been spending time with, he finally sees the light! He sees that he deserves WAY better and he won't settle for anything less. He's crazy about Carrie, sweet and kind, loving and honest. He even stands up for and protects Carrie's sister, just as strongly as he would Carrie-- how can you not love that?

Daniel comes into Gia's life right when she needs someone the most. Poor Gia. I hate high school kids. They can be so vicious. Gia falls victim to horrible bullying at school, just for doing something right and taking care of herself and her heart. Daniel is the light in the dark for her, the friend when she had none left.

Except for Cam. We didn't get to see much about Cam, which is probably my biggest regret for this book. What we did see, though? Love! I think Cam could be an exceptional character. I'm really hoping he plays a bigger role in the next books...

And, of course, we can't mention Cam without mentioning his mother. Ah! Everyone needs a Jodi in their life!! That one best friend who will drop everything and be there for you, with a shovel or whatever she needs to make you laugh or smile! Jodi is that friend.

Last, but most certainly not least is one particular brovarie! Enter, Ben. Ben Wilder-- fellow high school student that Smellanie loved to hate. Now, they are both grown up, both adults with children and relationships that didn't quite work out. Both have had some serious hurt in their life and are a little wary to move forward. As the months go on, Melanie develops from this angry, bitter divorcee who owns a Bridal salon to a woman who is looking forward to the future, a woman who believes in love again, and thinks she's found it with Ben. Ben just has to work through his past and try to come out on the other side towards Melanie...

Overall, I really enjoyed this book!! It was a 4- 4 1/2 star book for me! The only things keeping it from a 5 for me was: I wanted more Cam (I think Cam and Gia would be cute together!), I was left wanting with Carrie and Jason, and just wanted a little bit more to Melanie and Ben. Alas, I'm PRAYING one of those things will be remedied with Two of Hearts coming out this summer!!! Hurry up, summer!! Can't wait to read it :)

Amazing story!

I am in love with this story. The humor was contagious and found myself laughing out loud right from the start. I wished Melanie and Jodi were my friends.

We meet single mother Melanie and her twin daughters, Carrie and Gia. I loved how Beth did POV from each of them. To know what each was feeling and thinking was a great addition to the story.

We follow the loves and trials that the 3 of them are going through. From their love lifes, to trouble at school. It was such a realistic story, that I can see myself going through in the future.

Beth has such a way of writing that it pulls you right into her story. The writing was amazing and is not like anything else out there.

I can not wait for the next story. I fell in love with Carrie and Jason's relationship. I would definitley recommend this book to everyone!!

About the Author
DR. MYRA PERRINE has a passion for intimacy with God, and has been speaking, teaching, and writing on this subject for decades. She holds a Doctor of Ministry degree in Spiritual Formation, and has been working with Church Resource Ministries (CRM) since 1995 coaching leaders around the world. The founder of The 3D Network, Myra helps people discover how they were Designed by God to Dream with God and step into their Destiny in God. With a background in education, she has ministered in more than 45 nations, always bringing a combination of grace, laughter, & freedom wherever she goes. Myra has been an adjunct professor at Azusa Pacific University, and is currently teaching classes at Simpson University and A.W. The Back Binding Broken with even slightest Use

Sadly this "must have" addition to any library is not served by the quality of the publishing effort. The back binding broke the first two or three time I opened it. I buy hardcover in the hopes they will stand up under heavy use. I urge BPS to look at the quality of Wisdom Book published in the USA and then examine their own quality from a Chinese publisher.

Provocative

It probably says more about me than the book that I found a title which applies to something that surrounds every person provocative. However, it's likely that advanced Photoshop users will find something provocative in this book

The book is aimed at photographers who know the basics of photography, including exposure, and the use of Photoshop including layers and masks. The author's emphasis is on portraits and people photography and how to get the most from photographs of these subjects. Although the author spends a little time looking at hardware like digital cameras and at basic portrait lighting techniques, his main concern is with post processing.

The author's stated aim is to fill the gaps left by other books, like the reproduction of dark skin. And he does this in many ways that I haven't seen before. For example he suggests better skin colors can be achieved by looking at the CMYK readings and applying a rule of thumb. (If you don't know what CMYK is, this book isn't for you.) Varis suggests that for Caucasians magenta and yellow should be of approximately equal value, with cyan a fourth to a third of the value. Images of African Americans should have a higher percentage of cyan and magenta. He then tells you how to make these adjustments. He also shows how to make tone and contrast adjustments for both color and black-and=white images.

The author devotes a chapter to retouching, showing the reader how to ease those wrinkles and even do a little tummy tuck in Photoshop. He also devotes space to special effects, but he emphasizes alteration of the image not to tell lies, so much as to give effect to the photographer's vision. There is also a chapter on preparing output for print.

Most of the techniques that Varis shows are attempts at improvements on simpler Photoshop techniques. For example in the chapter on preparing for printing, he describes a method of improving on the usual unsharp mask sharpening. He does this by adding two additional layers that allow individual control of the prominence of the light halos and the dark halos that are the essence of unsharp mask.

Application of these techniques requires effort above and beyond normal Photoshop processing. How useful they will be depends on the amount of work you are willing to invest in an image, although most of the techniques could certainly be embedded in actions. Equally important is the question of your own ability to envision when to employ a particular technique to improve your work. An alternate consideration might be your willingness to experiment with several techniques to see which will benefit you.

The book includes a CD with the images used as examples in the book. I recommend that you read chapter 9 of the book which discusses these images before any other chapter. Then unzip the folders they come in into a new folder and follow along with the book. Often the changes are subtle and more easily seen on a monitor as they are made than on the printed page.

In summary, this is a book for the experienced Photoshop user, willing to spend the time examining techniques that might enable one to get that slight edge in his or her photographs that would put one ahead of other digital photographers.

Skin: The Complete Guide to Digitally Lighting, Photographing, and Retouching Faces and Bodies

I just finished reading Skin: The Complete Guide to Digitally Lighting, Photographing, and Retouching Faces and Bodies, a wonderful book for Adobe® Photoshop® enthusiasts. Although I would only consider myself an intermediate user of Photoshop, I found Lee Varis' book immensely helpful, and I highly recommend it to all those who photograph people.

Chapter 1: Digital Imaging Basics is a brief introduction to digital imaging basics. It quickly covers chips and pixels as well as dynamic ranges. Furthermore, Varis covers JPEG artifacts, cameras, memory cards, computers and monitor calibration. He finishes the chapter with a discussion on Photoshop preferences.

Chapter 2: Color Management Workflow, and Calibration is as the title suggests. The first few pages provide a high level overview of workflow management. Then Varis discusses color and light calibration. I must admit, he does have a rather funky looking set up of test targets that include the GretagMacBeth 24 patch plus Styrofoam cutouts and black traps. Varis provides a lengthy and detailed discussion on his calibration method. He also mentions that he prefers 8 bit processing as opposed to 16 bit. Moreover, he comments on the popular expose to the right practice.

::::The idea is good theory but bad practice because the histogram cannot tell you where you are placing your tones with any precision, and it can't tell you whether the histogram is appropriate for the subject. (What picture goes with this histogram?) The camera's histogram is only a general indication of the distribution of values in the camera-generated JPEG. It is usually a composite of all three channels. The RAW data has a much wider distribution of tones that will vary in each channel, so you may not know if you are clipping important data in the Red Channel simply by looking at the histogram display on the camera.::::

Chapter 3: Lighting and Photographing People is an overview of lighting. Varis uses different configurations of lights and reflectors to demonstrate various effects. The photographs contained in the book are helpful to understanding the concepts discussed.

Chapter 4: The Color of Skin teaches the reader about proper skin tones. Varis introduces how to use curves effectively as well as how to adjust skin tones by using the CMYK values. He then finishes the chapter with a discussion on cultural and personal preferences. What one group of people might desire, others might oppose. So it is important to understand your audience.

Chapter 5: Tone and Contrast: Color and B+W is an extremely interesting chapter because it discusses how to create B+W conversions and how B+W conversions can create better color photos. The first few pages discuss the channel mixer and split channels to obtain stunning B+W conversions. Next, Varis teaches the reader how B+W image can be used in luminosity blending to darken, lighten, and recover detail. I enjoyed part of the chapter because it opened up new avenues for processing my photos. Last, he discusses hue, saturation and toning effects.

Chapter 6: Retouching is a thoroughly enjoyable chapter. Varis begins with a basic retouching where he uses the healing brushes to smooth away wrinkles. But then he kicks it up a notch by subtly using the dodge and burn tools to make the image just that much better. He then goes on to show how to use Hue/Saturation Repair to address red blotchy skin. I found the before and after pictures were amazing. Varis then walks his readers through an example of an attractive woman in her fifties. The before and after pictures are remarkable. He then shows a similar set of before and after pictures for a beautiful young model likely in her twenties. He wraps the chapter up by discussing some thinning techniques as well as some further skin processing.

Chapter 7: Special Effects provides some useful tricks to generate interesting images. The four main themes of this chapter are soft focus, film grain and mezzotint, cross-processing, and tattoos. A substantial portion of the chapter is devoted to soft focus, which includes depth of field effects. Because photographers often want to create a softer, less harsh image or part of an image, I found this discussion helpful. I am not one for film grain and mezzotint. Similarly, I am not wild about cross-processing where you get unexpected colors in unexpected places. The last section on tattoos was interesting, even though I am not a tattoo fan. I liked the last part of the tattoo section where he described how to use Photoshop to create a fake tattoo.

Chapter 8: Preparing for Print focuses the following key themes: sharpening, color management for print, soft proofing, desktop printing, and creative print finishing. I am going to comment on the first and last items. Varis' sharpening discussion is very helpful. Prior to reading this book, I simply used unsharp mask and was done. Now, when I want to get a sharper picture, I use multiple sharpening layers in luminosity blending modes as well as darkening and lighting blending modes. This technique has the advantage of offering better control of the halos. Creative print finishing provides some options for designing captivating borders or edges to the photographs. In his examples, Varis shows how the edges provide added pizzazz to the already great photo.

Chapter 9: Parting Shots is a short chapter that provides some further high level commentary on workflow. Varis then walks the reader through the companion CD. I suspect most readers have already opened the CD and have been using the files all along, so this information is superfluous at this point. And last, he reminds readers that digital photography is still in its infancy. Much of what we have just learned is likely to become outdated soon. I believe, however, that if we understand and have developed a sense of adventure to experiment, our newly gained knowledge will help us as newer technologies and techniques emerge.

Being an intermediate, at best, Photoshop user, I found Skin to be a valuable resource. I enjoyed learning by working through the examples. I also enjoyed seeing how just some subtle steps make a significant difference. I highly recommend this book.

The Best Book of Its Kind

How many times have you taken a photograph that was "almost perfect"? You know what I mean. Either there's something in the background you didn't notice, a shadow or blemish on someone's face, or worse yet, it's the best photograph you've ever had taken of yourself, but your stomach was sticking out. As someone who has worked with Photoshop pretty regularly for a few years, I'm happy to say I can remedy most of those situations. Although I've used 'Photoshop for Dummies' and it has been helpful, 'Skin' offers suggestions most photographers never even though about. It was mostly through creativity and tenacity that Photoshop worked fairly well for me. It wasn't until I read 'Skin' that I realized I was working entirely too hard to achieve the effects I was after. Achieving appropriate skin tones is no longer guess work, eliminating or softening facial lines is a snap, and balancing colors throughout the photo has become a mandatory element. Trial and error is no longer a prerequisite in my photography. Author Lee Varis offers more information than I will ever use as an amateur. However, whether or not I ever incorporate all this information into my photography, it was fascinating to read about how easily it's all done. For me, the portrait "tricks" alone make this book worth while. I plan to keep it on my desk and use it every time I work on a photo.

Nice job Steve. Your YouTubes got me started using no knead methods. My first try at turbo presented a fabulous loaf. I will be trying a lot of these recipes. Someone who gave a lower score said all recipes are basically alike I disagree but there is of necessity close similarity in the base ingredients.This points out to me the possibilities for experimentation with variations. At 96 pages it is easy to flip thru all of it. I do wish that Amazon Kindle would redesign their interface so that like PDF books you could navigate using a side bar index, sure would make kindle a lot better to use on my MacBook. Hint Hint. Thanks Steve for one of my now favorite and most useful Ebooks.

easy to read

This Cook book is a easy read cook book. It does not have a lot of "extra" over the top information. Both my children have used it with success ages 11 and 7. If you watch the video that go with it, it helps enhance the book. Over all it is a nice introduction to no knead bread making. I have been bread making for over 30 yrs. and this method was easy and relaxed way of introducing bread making for my children.

About the Author

Jonathan Katz is a professor of computer science at the University of Maryland, and director of the Maryland Cybersecurity Center. He has published over 100 articles on cryptography, and serves as an editor of the Journal of Cryptology, the premier journal of the field. Prof. Katz has been invited to give introductory lectures on cryptography for audiences in academia, industry, and government, as well as an on-line cryptography course through Coursera.

Yehuda Lindell is a professor of computer science at Bar-Ilan University. He has published more than 90 articles on cryptography and four books, and has considerable industry experience in deploying cryptographic schemes. Professor Lindell lectures widely in both academic and industry venues on both theoretical and applied cryptography, and has been recognized with two prestigious grants from the European Research Council.

Very rigorous and complete, completely worthwhile if you are really into crypto

I have not finished the book yet, but from material I went so far and from Jonathan Katz's course on Cryptography I think I can describe authors way of providing information. I would characterize it in two keywords: rigorous and complete. Other materials I have met were maybe more lively but this one is is the best if you are really serious about crypto. It will give all the details you need to understand and work with modern cryptographic primitives. I will teach how to prove or disprove properties of various cryptographic schemes.

Good as a serious introduction

This is a serious introduction book. I enjoyed Katz's course on Coursera.

Note this is theoretical. If you are looking for material on hardware or physical attacks like side channel attacks or fault injection attacks, you will need to look elsewhere. With that said, it is useful as a reference even after you have digested the material because Katz is very particular with rigor, notation, and word choice -- the result of a mathematician who cares about communication.
