What a story! A young brilliant woman gives up a career and joins the underground world of polygamy just as it is being outlawed by the LDS church. She tells her story without pity or sensationalism, just honestly. Excellent reading.

Addressing how neoliberalism, or the new market fundamentalism, is shaping a range of registers from language and memory to youth and higher education, Giroux explores how education in a variety of spheres is transformed into a type of miseducation perpetuated through what he calls a "disimagination machine"-one that reproduces the present by either distorting or erasing the past. But Giroux is not content to focus on how matters of politics, subjectivity, power, and desire are colonized through forms of miseducation; he is also concerned with the educative nature of politics as the practice of freedom and how the emphasis on critique must be matched by a politics and discourse of resistance, hope, and possibility. This becomes particularly evident in his chapters on Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn. Thinking Dangerously makes clear that at the heart of the struggle for a radical democracy is the reviving of the radical imagination as the basis for new forms of political and collective struggle. Probing these issues through a series of interrelated essays and important interviews, Giroux provides an accessible, layered, and sustained example of how thinking dangerously is central to and connected with the struggle over the radical imagination and the fight to fulfill the promise of a radical democracy.

Reawakening the radical imagination

Henry Giroux’s Dangerous Thinking in the Age of the New Authoritarianism is a powerful indictment of the brutal and punitive forces that have come to characterize the neoliberal conjuncture. Giroux here diagnoses what he refers to as a “new form of authoritarianism,” a characterization he arrives at through thorough analysis of domestic and foreign politics (and the symptomatic relationship between these politics, between the militarized violence in, for instance, Afghanistan and Ferguson), the assault on dissent, critical language and education (which we see in the corporate assaults on public secondary and higher education), the rise of the surveillance state (which was brought to light by Edward Snowden, and speaks to the death of privacy at the expense of an utterly narcissistic consumerism) and, perhaps most convincingly, the public pedagogical force he calls the “disimagination machine” (which refers to the market-based educative nature of neoliberal politics that erases or distorts history and pubic memory). Neoliberal authoritarianism, he notes in the opening chapters, is new insofar as it is a particularly dangerous combination of direct Orwellian omnipresent and omnipotent surveillance, monitoring and control, as well as the less direct but equally formative ideological and cultural apparatuses that make up Huxley’s frightening totalitarian dystopia. Combined, these two forces produce an entirely more threatening and overwhelming authoritarianism, one that erodes the space for private reflection and makes basically any form of critical thinking dangerous. Under the auspices of this new authoritarianism, Giroux argues, both formal sites of education (secondary and higher education), and less formal modes of public pedagogy have been reduced to “dead zones of the imagination.” To counter this and to reclaim the hope of democracy in the US, Giroux calls on academics to embrace their roles as public intellectuals in order to begin to once again cultivate what he calls “the radical imagination.” This is necessary, he suggests in the final section of the book, in order to begin to hold power accountable for the structural violence wreaking havoc on the lives of poor, racialized, and “disposable” populations in the US and elsewhere, and to rebuild a better society around our “shared responsibilities” and not our “shared fears.” I recommend this book to students, scholars, public intellectuals, activists, artists and really anyone concerned about the diminished state of democracy throughout the world.

Dangerous Thinking builds on the groundbreaking work in The Violence of Organized Forgetting. These books are crucial for understanding the shaping of consciousness in neoliberal culture and they explain why we are living at such a dangerous historical moment. They point the way towards making a better more informed, reflective and thinking polity.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS BOOK. ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES. I STARTED READING THIS WHEN I WAS 10 OR 12 YR OLD. IM NOW 33. I READ THIS BOOK EVERY YEAR. I NOW READ IT TO MY CHILDREN. IT IS ENCOURAGING TO READ HOW POWERFUL FAITH IS. LIKE WHEN MRS FOGLIO'S BIBLE COULDNT BE BURNED. I LOVED THIS WOMAN AND SHE HAS INSPIRED ME IN MANY WAYS TO SERVE THE LORD. READING ABOUT HER AND HAVING A GRANDMOTHER THAT WAS RIGHTOUS ARE THE MAIN REASONS I FOLLOW THE LORD TODAY. THIS BOOK IS GREAT!!! IT WILL MAKE YOU LAUGH, CRY, AND RAH RAH RAH!!! Hey God! I'm thankful!

When I read this book I could hardly put it down. The story is so down to earth and true and you always want to know 'what will Mama do next' ?
I grew up in a neighborhood that was at least half Italian and many of them immigrants.
I don't think this is a story of whether Catholics are right or Pentecostals are right. It's not a story of denominations. It's a story of God's great love for each of us and the miracles He will perform when we believe in him and not a religion or denomination.
Too often some want to make it an "us vs. them" thing. This story is not that. It's a very heart warming and sincere account of a wonderful family and their friends.
As a matter of fact, I was surprised and very pleased when I read the part about Mr. Maronni and the pizza parlor. I know him and his wife!!!
They are wonderful people also.
So, for those out there who see this as an attack on their religion, it's not. It's a story of a family, their faith, their openness and belief in God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit in all it's power and beauty. The church they/we attend doesn't matter... it's the relationship we have with God and His son Jesus. That's what truly matters.
Religions have too many "church rules" that are not found in the Bible.
God's way, direct from the Bible, is the only way. Read it for yourself and see.

This book leads me to look back to the time when I came to trust the Lord Jesus Christ. It happened in an old building with a woodburning stove and handmade benches. But the true gospel was preached there every Sunday and every Friday night.

In Absolutely Free! Zane Hodges issues a vigorous call to the evangelical church to return to the biblical and Reformational truth of sola fide -- faith alone. The author expounds the New Testament doctrine of salvation as the simple giving and receiving of a free gift of everlasting life. He contrasts this with modern "lordship salvation" teaching in which repentance and surrender to God are made conditions for salvation.

Hodges rejects the "lordship" view of saving faith as both unbiblical and a clear departure from the view of faith held by John Calvin and Martin Luther. He stresses that the Christian life is a process of growth and spiritual education in which believers learn to develop the rich potentials of eternal life. Christian living is also presented as a spiritual warfare. Although, salvation cannot be lost, says Hodges, defeat in the spiritual conflict must be taken seriously, and the believer must learn to rely on God's power in order to live victoriously.

About the Author
Zane Hodges has sought to live a life consistent with the marvelous and undeserved grace that his loving heavenly Father showed Zane, when He gave Zane the absolutely free gift of eternal life through faith alone in Jesus Christ. Currently, Zane is engaged in pastoral ministry at Victor Street Bible Chapel in Dallas, where he has ministered for over 40 years. Zane received his BA degree from Wheaton College and his ThM degree from Dallas Theological Seminary. He taught New Testament Greek and exegesis at Dallas Theological Seminary for 27 years until 1987. Zane also served as the Chairman of the New Testament Department.

Hodges lets his yes be yes and his no be no

Hodges argues very clearly and simply the case for the absolute freeness of the gift of salvation. He argues for a simple faith that needs no qualifiers, no contingencies, no long drawn out explanations of what faith is, what precedes it, what follows it, or what accompanies it. In short, he argues for a true faith alone. Though well argued, many others just cannot say "faith alone" and leave it at that - they must qualify it somehow. He argues that "free" means just that - free. He argues that a "gift" is just that - a gift, not something that we have a coupon book for that we must keep on making payments for the rest of our lives. This is one author who has let his yes be yes and his no be no, and for his integrity of conviction has suffered being called "Raca" by many professing believers.
There are no offers of salvation in the Bible that took 200 pages of text to deliver and understand before they could be received. Nor do any of the offers require the recipient of the offer to have thorough knowledge of a complicated theology that had not been invented yet. They didn't even have to read a copy of John or Romans (if they existed yet). They were asked to believe, and in that split second they either believed or they didn't. Hodges argues for a faith that is just that - faith (no qualifiers).
The teaching is rather simple as he leaves the more technical debate for the endnotes. This allows the reader to simply grasp the ideas while at the same time knowing that they can be backed up with solid exegesis.
"Absolutely Free," along with "The Gospel Under Siege" and "Grace in Eclipse" by the same author form a sort of mini commentary filled with verse by verse interpretation. Numerous difficult passages in the New Testament are expounded and the student will grow greatly in his knowledge by reading them. However you must read all three of them to get the full picture of Hodges' theology as each book is focused on a particular topic. After reading all three you will notice that the same themes repeat themselves throughout his writing.
If the concept of "faith alone" is true and correct, then Hodges' theology comes very close to defining it without changing its basic meaning. If we do not agree with Hodges, then perhaps "faith alone" is not the correct term for what we truly believe. We should not deceive ourselves. There are many books out there that do spend 200 pages of text trying to explain why "faith alone" really means faith plus something else. Hodges book just doesn't do that, so should we fault him for that? The book is both easy to read and to understand. In fact, it was an absolute joy to read.

A breath of fresh air!

I love this book. As someone who once promoted lordship salvation, this book is especially comforting. I had absolutely no assurance of my salvation back when I held the view of lordship advocates, and since realizing that salvation is really by faith alone, I no longer doubt my salvation. I glanced at the introduction to MacArthur's book "Saved Without A Doubt", and it is understandable to me why some in his congregation who are pretty solid Christians would doubt their salvation. I feel for the man who wrote the letter to MacArthur that was quoted at the beginning of his book; I know what he is going through. Anyone who holds to lordship salvation and thinks they can have assurance of their own salvation is kidding theirself...or either they do not understand how utterly wicked their own sins are in God's eyes. This book was very comforting to me, and in addition to helping me have assurance of my own salvation, it has encouraged me to be more of a soul winner, since the gospel is even simpler than I had imagined. Hodges' arguments are very scriptural and his exegesis is superb. I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

A Breath of Fresh Grace

Zane Hodges' book, "Absolutely Free! A Biblical Reply to Lordship Salvation," has given me a newfound confidence and trust in the finished work of Christ.

Hodges' book is a reply to John MacArthur's book, "The Gospel According to Jesus." Hodges' book, compared to another MacArthur book on a similar subject ("Hard to Believe: The High Cost and Infinite Value of Following Jesus"), was truly a work of grace. Even in refuting MacArthur's arguments, Hodges showed considerable grace, refusing to engage in ad hominem attacks, a tactic far too frequent in Christian polemic works.

Honestly, my only complaint with the book is that it's an old work. But it answers the LS advocates honestly and openly, without resorting to rhetoric, even in 2007.

Reading MacArthur left me more confused than settled, but reading AF! made the topic of salvation clear to me. I am convinced, praise God!, that I am justified by faith alone apart from any works. The free grace position (so despised and maligned as the "no-lordship" or "cheap grace" position) at least tries to be consistent in its declaration that faith alone in Christ alone justifies and saves. Am I glad to finally leave the sinking sand and quagmire of lordship salvation (Neo-Puritanism), and to stand indeed on the promises of Christ, my Rock who is immovable and unshakeable!

And more important than Hodges' book is Jesus Christ's clear promise that "whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16b).
