Yay! renting kindle book saved me lots of $$$

I am really pleased with my rental of the kindle version of Psychology in Action. The rental price on it is about $120 cheaper than purchasing a used book from my college bookstore. I agree with the other reviewer that it would be convenient to have page numbers available, but that was not a deal breaker for me as I tend to read the chapter before the class lecture. My professor does not often refer to page numbers in the text anyway. I had to play around with the format of the book when I first downloaded it, as the text was huge and the page breaks made no sense, but once I had decreased the font size, toggled with the multi-column, and changed the background color, (all easy to do), I found the text 2 be very readable. I use the Kindle for Mac application, and I had no difficulty navigating the book. There are search, table of contents, and bookmark tools which I found to be very helpful. With the table of contents, you can click on the chapter you want, and it will take you there, and there is a dictionary tool so you can highlight a word and instantly access a definition of the word w/in the application without having to open any other windows. Another reviewer had mentioned that when they rented it, there was no way to remove highlighting once it had been done. That has been fixed. Now you only have to click on highlighted text and you can remove the highlight, or add a note to it. Overall, I am very pleased with the product and especially it's price point. I am hoping that amazon will add a lot more textbooks to their rental program in the near future, as it was such a blessing to me to find such an economical option.

I ordered and PAID for a PAPERBACK EDITION! What i got was a loose leaf mess. Seriously for 70 dollars? I would have purchased it new from my bookstore for 90 had I know this is what would come. They really should be embarrassed.

I am viewing this on my Kindle and have found that some illustrations are very hard to read. also there should be a way to jump from one chapter to the next and I cannot do this on the Kindle. I made a mistake buying this for my Kindle as it is difficult to use it for my class.

A good source of ideas that need filtering

Street Smarts is one of the better trading books out there. However, as another reviewer rightly bemoans, the explanations are too short. The main problem with a lot of these patterns is that most require a heavy amount of filtering. The Turtle Soup strategy will kill you in a trending market, it needs filtering even in non-trending markets. It seems to have some promise in a high ADX environment only when used as a continuation signal and not a reversal. I tried it on the 5 minute S&P's. Trust me, I had to do a lot to make this pattern work. So much that I discarded the idea of using it. Also beware, some time frames are very bad for the anti technique. I know this is not how it is supposed to work, but from what I have seen there are certain intraday timeframes in the S&P which are just horrible for technical indicators. Play around, you'll see. The range contraction patterns have promise, however the authors neglect to tell you that most should be traded in the direction of the trend. I like the statistical studies in the back of the book. LBR is not a mechanical trader, she has mechanical patterns but she decides when to implement them. Do not trade these patterns mechanically unless you want to get ripped to shreds. Hence I refer back to what I have said from the start, the patterns in this book need much filtering!

Overpriced to impress beginners

This ridiculously expensive book (booklet?), mostly outdated and primitive-looking charts with oversized text and plenty of useless appendices to fill more pages contains a collection of multi-day (aka "swing" trading) entry and exit recipes that are claimed by the authors to work well not only with futures --as most charts in the book are from futures-- but intraday and with stocks. You can find formulaic trading recipes and advice like this here and there and in other books without having to pay [item price]. When you learn how to trade, you will find that no one needs any magical recipes to go in or out of trades and that in the end anything works as well as anything else if you know how to do it appropriately. But if they told you this, you wouldn't buy the book. Each chapter contains a small description of a trading recipe and a set of ilustrations of the recipe, each one filling a whole page with three sentences and a chart that looks like it was taken from a snapshot of a computer screen in the early 1980's. Then, at the end of the charts sections, there are a few comments in dialog form.
Linda Raschke's comments on some of the magic formulas are more interesting and more believable than Connors'. She claims to be a daily scalper in the futures markets. Some of the materials in her old Web site were interesting too, though she seems to be spending a lot of time working the trading fair educational circuit. Is she making a great deal of money trading all of these finger-counting strategies, entering after 20 bars here and there and puting a stop just above yesterday's high when the ADX is under 20% and the S&P are in an inside day combining historical volatility with Tony Crabel's NR7, etc, etc, or does she need to supplement her income teaching seminars for $1500 an evening? As for the other author, the real "advanced" strategy Larry Connors knows well is how to make money out of the miriads of hopeful wannabes that overpay for his expensive books and for his TradingMarkets.com web site, which costs more than a thousand dollars per year and is just a hook to get the members to buy more overpriced "trading services", $5,000.00 tutorials, "ultimate" courses, fantastic techniques, videotapes, etc., etc. Just think of this before you dish out your money to this guy: if he knew any "advanced" trading strategies to make real money he wouldn't be peddling his overpriced merchandise for a living. Wouldn't it be nicer to live as a rich trader, trading from your yatch your great advanced strategies for millions, instead of busting your rear running a Web site in downtown LA to trap yet another fool who thinks that perhaps this new advisory service will "make him" money? Let Connors first show that he can make millions trading before he calls his strategies "advanced". Obviously, they are just not advanced enough to make him rich --though he will be soon, if you pay him [item price] for this mostly charts collection of unfocused advice. If you still feel you have to learn the basics from the popular self-appointed "gurus", do it at least with a minimal expense.

Loved the book. Recommend it for serious traders

First of all let me state that you must already have a certain concept of trading and trading terminology to benefit from this book. You must also understand and believe the importance of chart reading as a trader to fully understand what the authors are saying. I believe some of the negativity written about this books is because the readers didnt understand trading concepts as applied to chart reading or disregard chart reading altogether as a valid tool to trading.
With this said, I have to say that the book was beneficial for me as a short term trader. It helped me find patterns that I would've otherwise overlooked before reading this book. Let me also add that the turtle soup and turtle soup plus one does not really apply 100%, per say, to the fast momentum stocks I screen for. However, reading those strategies helped fine tune my entry and exit strategies when I enter a trade. It did so by helping me look for intraday swings and the probabilities of possible price action for next day trading based on what happened to the price at the close. If anything, the book helped me alot because it opened my mind to other trading possibilities and thus form ideas for myself.
Like another reader said, the authors are not mechanical traders. Thus these patterns and strategies should not be taken mechanically. Instead one should trade cautiously using discretionary stops. The book will only teach you about patterns in the market that have a high probable outcome. It's up to the individual to trade the patterns and use protective stops in the case the anticipated move goes wrong.

Everything I Look For In a Movie Book

Bowie's analysis of the movie is consistently insightful and well-stated, and funny, too. His personal anecdotes elevate the book and kept me turning the pages. I admire how he owned up to his shortcomings and transgressions so even handedly, which is difficult to pull off. Rarer still is the writer who can present his charms without being smug or conceited. It's a smart, humorous read that made me want to see Heathers again.

Sadly disappointing

As a fan of other books in this series, Deep Focus: Heathers was a big disappointment. The main problem I had with this book is that the author’s personal reflections seem to overshadow the analysis of Heathers. This type of anecdotal interjection is fine when done subtly, strategically (for example, Jonathan Lethem’s Deep Focus: They Live incorporated some anecdotes, but they were brief, poignant and enhanced the analysis) but in the case of Jon Ross Bowie’s text, it was distracting and overdone. On page nine, when the discussion of Heathers officially begins, Bowie states, “If you’ve made it this far in this book, you’re probably familiar with the [Heathers] storyline,” and I found this line rather humorous considering that, yes, the first nine pages were hard to get through considering they were, for the most part, a reflection on Bowie’s high school life. Later, amongst other personal interjections, we’re treated to updates, views on “our author” and general, lackluster comments of the film Heathers from Bowie’s high school girlfriends (Heather #1 and Heather #2).

There are some good sections in this book, some funny lines and some decent trivia for the Heathers fan (I especially enjoyed the insight into the names within the film) but the analysis is also disjointed at times, there are many unnecessary tangents and Bowie’s personal information was really drowning and uninteresting.

An engaging extended essay--not too nostalgic, nor overly academic. I was a little concerned about other reviewers' complaints about the author's narrative presence, but it worked for me; I enjoyed the personal perspective & enjoyed comparing it, looking back, to my own relationship with Heathers--maybe that's partially because I'm almost exactly the same age as the author. Reading this was like the feeling you get on those seemingly rare days when you find something really compelling to read on the Internet that's more than a few paragraphs long.

About the Author
Born in Poland in 1884, Rav Yehuda Ashlag spent most of his life in what is now Israel, where in 1922 he founded the original Kabbalah Center. He was the teacher and spiritual master of Rav Yehuda Brandwein, to whom leadership of the Center was passed when Rav Ashlag died in 1956. Rav Brandwein, in turn, designated Rav P.S. Berg to lead the Center when he died in 1969. Michael Berg is co-director of The Kabbalah Center International, the leading educational organization dedicated to the wisdom of Kabbalah. Son of the preeminent Kabbalist Rav P.S. Berg, and an accomplished Kabbalistic scholar and teacher in his own right, Michael Berg was the first person ever to translate the entire 23-volume Zohar from ancient Aramaic into English. His other books include The Secret, Secrets of the Zohar, Days of Connection, Becoming like God, and, The Way. He lives in Los Angeles.

West Coast was an at home chef looking for a way to formalize his passion in cooking, and East Coast was, well, a girl who put jalapeños in everything and harmed many the unsuspecting. We are two friends living on opposite sides of the country, and we decided to create a blog that focused on recipe development, answering questions such as: How are recipes created? Where do chefs get inspiration from? How do you then take that inspiration and translate it to a dish?

We have progressed a lot, learned a lot about our personal cooking philosophies, and decided to share all of our knowledge and research in hopes of helping you.

This book has evolved along with our journey. It is much more than just a cookbook. The recipes (all originals) from us and the chefs we interview are nothing without the knowledge around research and recipe development. If you are looking to become a chef, or up your creativity in the kitchen by developing your own recipes, or simply open your world to new ideas, then this book is for you.

I felt that the chef interviews were very insightful. It feels refreshing to hear advice from chefs that actually still cook on a day to day basis. The market is flush with books from kitchen personalities that have been removed from real cooking for many years. Though those books contain fantastic insight, I think this short book serves as a candid, straightforward, and inspiring look into how professional chefs approach making new food. As a benefit, it also includes tasty and not too complicated recipes.

Great for Anyone Who Makes Up Recipes

I am in the process of writing a cookbook. I often devise my own recipes. But I didn't know quite how to develop them into a format adequate for a cookbook. This book helps me both to develop the recipes and to make them intelligible for others. I will be using it quite a lot.
