Being one of the book's authors, I can hardly claim a detached perspective (grin), but I did want to say a few words about Skeleton Key so amazon.com readers could get a clearer picture of the book.

Skeleton Key: A Dictionary for Deadheads is the first in-depth map of the Deadhead subculture, the global community of folks who love the music of the Dead and the experience of Dead shows, and build community with others who feel the same way.

I am very grateful that my co-author and I got to record so much of the humor, lore, depth, and passion of our community before the Grateful Dead ceased to exist. In writing this book, we interviewed hundreds of Heads - at shows and online - and we tried to undo a lot of the shallow stereotyping of Deadheads promulgated by lazy journalists by depicting as broad a spectrum of Heads as possible.

A book deserving of reissue

As a youth in South Florida, I recall the Miami riots of 1980 as a time of excitement and menace. Although far removed from the violence, I remember the concerned voices on the radio and the firey images on television. Marvin Dunn, a sociologist and community leader, places the riot in historical perspective. He profiles the black communities of Overtown and Liberty City, the culture of the Miami Police Department and the incident that touched off the rioting. Dunn convincingly explains that the rioters came from a cross section of the black community, from middle-class professionals to the inner-city poor, and that the violence was not goal-driven, like the urban uprisings of the 1960s. The riots represented pure rage springing from a host of long-held grievences. In many ways, the Miami riot of 1980 foreshadowed the LA Riots. Dunn and Porter also fault the Miami Police for their handling of the riots and describe several scenarios by which they could have put a stop to the violence. I recommend this book to any and all who are interested in race relations and/or the relationship between urban law enforcement and the black community.

Bruce Porter and Marvin Dunn's 1984 examination of one of the most brutal events in American history should be required reading for anyone who cares about the fragile state of the fabric that is our society, woven of many fibers, strong, yes but easily unraveled. The book is objective in tone and very thorough in detail. The graphic accounts of the wanton murders of innocent motorists and the senseless destruction of a city are disturbing.
I recommend this volume to anyone who cares about the state of American society then and now.

Kip S. Thorne is the Feynman Professor Emeritus of Theoretical Physics at Caltech. His books include Gravitation and Black Holes and Time Warps. Roger D. Blandford is the Luke Blossom Professor of Physics and the director of the Kavli Institute of Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology at Stanford University. Both are members of the National Academy of Sciences.
