The night my husband had a major heart attack, while in transport to the hospital, and in terrible pain, he grabbed my hand and made me promise I would write the book for ladies that I had been planning to write for over 20 years. I had boxes of papers that dated back to my young teens that included notes gleaned from sermons by preacher long since dead, tidbits from newspapers, pages ripped from several decades of old Sunday School journals and magazines, and jotted down notes uttered by many unsuspecting ladies. Anything concerning marriage that found a place in my heart and in an old box was kept. When my husband came home from the hospital he set up an office for me. He patiently taught me how to cut and paste and several other tricky things on the computer until he was sure I could do my job. Then very early every morning for three weeks he walked me to my new office and said he would be back with my lunch and supper. I went through the old box of wisdom, typed in the things I found inside, looked up the Scriptures, and wrote what was on my heart. Created to Be His Help Meet came together quickly. After I was finished, he worked several weeks editing the messy document. Then right after Christmas of 2004, the first books rolled off the press. It is 2014, the 10th anniversary. I am glad to report my husband has not only survived, he has thrived. Created to Be His Help Meet has thrived as well. It is now in 12 languages, with contracts from different publishing companies and distributors all over the world. Today more is sold in China than here in the USA. Women all over the world are learning how to honor their husbands. They are opening up their Bibles to see if the things I wrote are really in the Bible. Many are falling in love for the first time in their married life as they lay down anger and bitterness and learn to be cherished. Some are coming to know the Savior, and many of the ladies write that their husbands are willing to consider God due to the amazing change in their life. We have seen good fruit; much good fruit. I now have another box stuffed with ideas, letters I have received these last few years from women who read the book and expressed concerns they feel I failed to address-this is why we added the two new chapters and made revisions to other chapters My God bless you as you seek Him. About the Author
Debi Pearl was raised in Memphis, Tennessee, in a good home, by parents who were faithful to point her to God. As a teenager Debi was actively involved in witnessing, ministering to the sick and wounded veterans, and serving in hospitals in Memphis. About twenty four years ago, Debi and her husband Mike moved to rural Tennessee where they continued in the work by holding Bible studies in local homes, which eventually led to regular meetings of the local body of believers, and the starting of a prison ministry where Mike ministered every Saturday for over twenty three years. God eventually led Mike and Debi into the ministry of writing on child training and family relationships, which they now feel is their life s work and calling. The result of this work led to the formation of No Greater Joy Ministries (NGJ), a 501 (c) (3). The largest project that NGJ has ever been involved in is the Good and Evil Project, a work to translate the Illustrated Bible Storybook Good and Evil (G & E) into 100 languages. G & E has over 42 languages in print, and another 42 languages in the process of being translated or edited. To date over 1,000,000 of her books have been sold in several languages. He's the king and I'm the queen!!!

Well let's start by saying that all those negative 1 star reviewers out there didn't make an effort to apply anything from this book. Secondly if you are in a physically abusive relationship you should go somewhwere safe NOW!! All the reviewers out there that imply this book advises you or loved ones to continue being physically abused are lieing!!! If any of them actually read it they would have gotten to the part about how to deal with different types of abuse. Like how?? In this book you are advised to either let it go (in some forms of verbal, mental and emotional abuse) and recognize/ work on why he may resort to this. Stand up for yourself and speak in calm truth and dignity (again in verbal, mental and emotional abuse) while seeking underlying issues and finding resolutions. In other forms of abuse this book advises you to CALL AUTHORITIES NOW!!

Now my review:
I was skeptical of this book when I started but quickly realized that the simple lessons on supporting my honey have made my life so much easier!!! Gone are the days of being sour to him when he comes home from work late. ( what was I trying to prove? That I'm not glad he got home safely to tuck his babies in bed?) Gone are the days of trying to force my conscience on him (I was creating such tension and had no idea). Gone are the days of my feeling like a failure because I didn't complete everything on my own agenda (what's more important getting my endless list complete or making him smile because I'm happy to sit on the couch and hold his hand and put him first). Gone are the days of wishing he would treat me like a queen becausw now I really do feel like a queen!!!! Why??? Because now I know how to treat him like a king!!!!

Fabulous book. Yes, I wanted to throw it against the wall a couple of times, and no I don't agree with every word, but I have to say it has changed my marriage and those of several women with whom I counsel. As a result of reading this book, I see the "marriage scriptures" in a new light. I am so thankful for this invaluable resource.

Things to keep in mind when reading this book

I have followed the Pearls for awhile now and this includes Michael Pearls teaching to men, and what it means to be submissive.

There is absolutely nothing in his teaching that says that women need to be blindly obedient or not have opinions.. or to be a non-person. He has a video on You Tube where he discusses this. I would encourage you to watch this video before you comment on what you believe his or Debis perspective to be.

This is not a book for men to read and wag in their wives face. Debi is hard on women in places because she is directing her teaching to women and women ALONE. This is not an instruction book for men to use to correct their wives!

I'm single and don't have this book for relationship advice, but I have it to help me to be a Godly, discerning and wise woman as I move into my later years.

Exceptional resource for the Alien fan!

It's odd that at writing I didn't seem to see any reviews for this book-- which is weird, considering it's been out for a few months now. I think that may be in part due to the underground nature of BFI's library. To be fair, I didn't even know these books existed until my film professor at college brought in his copy of the BFI Terminator book to help us get a grip on narrative development.

To any readers who are unaware (much like I was until recently,) the British Film Institute publishes neat little paperbacks that analyze popular films of the past few decades under their Modern Classics series, and Alien finally got its turn! In a nutshell, they analyze the film from many different angles-- to its thematic elements, to physical things such as how it was made. These books are well-written and I hope some of the other, older ones I ordered (Blade Runner and The Thing) stack up as well.

It has some nice pictures and concept art from a multitude of Ridley Scott films, not just Alien, which was a nice touch-- this book considers all aspects of a film production and how it holds up in a modern age with fresh eyes and ears. Ridley is a sci-fi master, from his eponymous Alien, to the cult classic Blade Runner, and to his much-debated epic, Prometheus, his work will be talked about for the decades to come, even as Alien nears its 40th anniversary.

While it certainly doesn't bring forth much new trivia or tidbits of pictures, it does allow the reader to get a better creative grasp on Ridley Scott's sci-fi masterpiece and offers some great inspiration for the budding writer or director. The avid fan of xenomorphs and Space Jockeys will almost certainly have unearthed most of the information and pictures contained in this book, but for the price, the Alien addition to the BFI library of publications is a great resource, whether to fans of sci-fi cinema, film majors, or just fans of Alien in general.

The cover painting by Marta Lech is a masterpiece as well-- it's not been since Giger's original "Big Chap" that the world has seen such a ghostly, perfect organism. Her rendering of the Alien serves as a great keystone to complement the aesthetic and design of both the original creature itself, as well as that of the film.

All in all, this is a well-written, gem of a book totally (in my opinion) worth it's sticker price, and makes for a nice addition to the collection of an Alien fan, or a sci-fi fan in general.

Great Reference

Though the ideals and principles of this group are unique to put it nicely, I do like the tarot card parallels and definitions provided by them in their book. The book falls apart rather easily, so be careful not to snap the binding by opening it too far. The definitions are extremely simplified, so if you are looking for an in depth meaning to any of the cards, look elsewhere. However, I use astrology and tarot together and found this to be my handy dandy reference guide when my memory fails me on a card's parallel. It's rather small, can fit nicely into a purse or bag of goodies.

The most authentic golden dawn deck around

Though I have some reservations regarding this deck's art, this deck's strength is in it's adherence to the descriptions of the golden dawn inner order deck descriptions in Book T, the initiation rituals, and Hodos Chamelionis.

Wang's deck intentional lack in certain details in the minor arcana, e.g. the astrological signs and the court cards' 'jewelery', and in it's colours, diverges from the intructions given in Book T. Having seen a few Whare Ra pips, which lack the astrological signs, possibly this divergence has some basis in previous G.D. decks.

Some of the court cards in this deck face forward. The Opening of the Key requires all court cards to face, even slightly, either left or right.

The court cards reproduced from Westcott's papers in The Golden Dawn Court Cards (Golden Dawn Studies No 5) by Darcy Kuntz conform to that demand, e.g. the princess of cups faces slightly to the right as indicated by the contour of her face and only the left ear being visible. Those drawings are in agreements with those given in "Key to Tarot divination", AFAIK written by Westcott as well (there are two notes signed S.A. - Sapere Aude was Westcott's moto).

I hope future editions of the deck would correct this issue.

this golden dawn of tarot set is great for any answers you might be looking for. it follows the Qablah and has a section in the book that explanes the Qabalah's mystical tree of life. also included in the cards is a way to get a date or time as the answer being the only deck iv ever seen with this feature. this is also one of the only decks of the later twentieth century to be approved by a member of the golden dawn

About the Author
Steve Krug (pronounced "kroog") is best known as the author of Don't Make Me Think: A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability, now in its second edition with over 350,000 copies in print. Ten years later, he finally gathered enough energy to write another one: the usability testing handbook Rocket Surgery Made Easy: The Do-It-Yourself Guide to Finding and Fixing Usability Problems. The books were based on the 20+ years he's spent as a usability consultant for a wide variety of clients like Apple, Bloomberg.com, Lexus.com, NPR, the International Monetary Fund, and many others.

His consulting firm, Advanced Common Sense ("just me and a few well-placed mirrors") is based in Chestnut Hill, MA. Steve currently spends most of his time teaching usability workshops, consulting, and watching old episodes of Law and Order.

New & Improved!

There has been a noticeable shift in technology design - it's all about us - the users! In light of this change, Steve Krug has updated his bestselling guide to web usability. As he says himself, "The basic principles are the same even if the landscape has changed, because usability is about people and how they understand and use things, not about technology. And while technology often changes quickly, people change very slowly."

His core common sense approach remains the same, but with all the new devices that people are interacting with these days, the competitiveness of a product relies on how easy it is to use. You could pay for a professional like Krug to determine how usable your product is, if you can afford it. But even then, it's important to learn the principles yourself so you know whether the person you hire is considering and addressing the right issues. Happily, this book practices what it preaches, it's written in a friendly chatty way and well designed. In short, this great book goes down easy.

I've come across a lot of design books in my time and several in my last year while pursuing a higher education in graphic design - including a personal favorite The Practice of Creativity: A Manual for Dynamic Group Problem-Solving, which Krug strongly endorses in a previous edition's "Recommended Reading". It would have been so great to have this book at my disposal while I was studying website design because the information is so well organized. For my classes I was provided Peachpit software books, which I found a little hard to follow for being too text heavy. If you are going to educate on design principles, you should follow similar rhetoric. Krug's book organizes information in color, in tables, and often have entertaining illustrations.

You MUST get this if you do Web development, online PR, apps, or other user interface and/or online communication

This is arguably the best introduction to Web usability, and much of its philosophy is applicable to design and communication generally. The original edition revolutionized my (and many others') approach to Web development and online PR. This newer edition improves on the original with no loss or faults. I'd like to see an even newer one that covered mobile apps and such, but that would just be icing on the cake. While this is not as in-depth as Nielsen Norman Group usability reports, those are highly focused on very specific matters, are expensive, and are intended for high-pay Web developers with major clients. If you're just getting started, or don't do this for a living, or are the webmaster for a single organization, this book is probably most of what you need for shapening your Web architecture intuition regarding what will effectively communicate and what will not. Note: This is not a technical HTML coding book, it's a user interface and communications psychology book.

Bible of web usability common sense

I am a doctor, a surgeon, so you would say why are you reading “Don’t make me think”. Good question.
Today we all live by the web, through smart phones and PCs, apps and websites, not to mention social networks that I personally have not yet discovered. The web and its usability is part of our common language, a new alphabet, grammar and syntax we have had to learn to live in our world and get along in our profession and free time. But if you met a person who was only able to speak and not read and write you would say he is an analphabet, the same is not true for a user of the web from whom no one expects she/he be able of composing or better designing a website or an app.
Presently, many domain professionals are willing to designing web content necessary for their specific necessities, but not yet able to do it by themselves and look for “primers” or “how to..” books to help them start or go pro in this activity.
“Don’t make met think” is I believe one of the basic books to learn from. Not only it is easy to read and very clear, but it is also funny, entertaining, full of useful information and at the same time systematic and complete.
Steven Krug is evidently a guru of web usability and he has reached the 3rd edition of his book that has filled the minds and hearts of thousands of computer people. It has been and is so popular I believe because it gets to the point of how to think before starting to design. In some ways it is almost a psychology text or better it uses a practical psychological approach to give simple directives to follow in order to keep on the right tract while carrying out design. It sidetracks into information on attention, the use of time, expert remarks on design and interfaces and also on how people actually think. A whole chapter is focused on ethics of web design: a web site should be a “mensche” or as we would say in Italian “un uomo d’onore”, a man of honor, and another on mobile applications with all their space related problems.
So, if you are a information technology specialist or if you are an amateur wanting to learn how to design an app or a website, this book is a good point to start from. Read it, love it and treasure its teachings.

Really detailed book

I really enjoyed the book, especially the section about the strategies the defense likes to use against Gus Malzahn's offense. This book is really going to come in handy next football season, and it's already given me a lot of things to watch for once college football is back again in the fall!

Should Be Required Reading in Every School

I always wondered what it would be like if all of a sudden we had some great disaster, and we'd have to reboot our civilization. This is way more complicated than it might first appear. I'm an engineer and though I know how to do a lot of things, I do not have the knowledge to make some very basic things that I would certainly like to have after such a disaster. At least not before I saw this book.

For example, could I make soap? If you think about it, soap would be really important in the dirty world we would find ourselves living in after the disaster. Fairly unsophisticated people made it for themselves for hundreds of years. Do you know the recipe? The ingredients might be fairly easy to find (assuming you know the list) with the possible exception of lye. Making that is a bit of a challenge - do you know how? Maybe going to a library that had paper books on science and engineering would help - if there was one around. Remember, the internet (and electricity) would be non-existent. If I had a copy of the book being reviewed here or had studied it very well before the disaster, I'd know how to make the lye needed. By the way, excess lye can result in some very harsh soap - that is another issue that has to be worked out by the soap maker. One more challenge in the brave new world perhaps.

There are numerous other basic things we take for granted that we'd have to figure out how to make after the disaster. Would you know what to do? I'm not so sure I would without having read this or a similar book(s), and I am an engineer. The book here provides us with the know how to make the basic items we would need in an initial reboot. It's nice to find a reference that tells us so much in so few pages.

Note that some reviewers felt this book was a little light on details, and they may have a point in some respects - it would probably not be enough for people who aren't at least a little "handy" in some sense. But, it does point people in the right direction in only one volume. After the disaster, it might be hard to lug around a set of books. In any case, the book reviewed here does provide perspective.

Some reviewers stated that there were some other single volume guides that would be more useful - Boy Scout manual, camping manuals, etc. This might be true in some respects, but I think not in others.

Given the (over) dependence we see today on things electronic, maybe this book (a paper copy) should be given out and be required reading in every school, just in case. Even if the disaster never happens, this would provide some perspective for the members of the technology dependent, yet largely technology ignorant society that we have become.

A "cure" for the too-specialized society?

I am not a "Prepper," but I am really enjoying this book. Initially, Dartnell's goal to explain nearly every major technological aspect of human existence -- agriculture, textile-making, and even producing electricity -- seemed *too* ambitious, I think he does a very nice job ... particularly given the book's length. (One would expect a book like this to be made up of several massive tomes, not a 200+ page paperback.) Granted, a few of the rebuilding processes are outlined in very limited terms: I was perhaps able to grasp his section on purifying water, for example, if only because of the numerous "survivor-style" television shows I have seen (such as "Survivorman" with Les Stroud). But for other things, such as growing crops, I think that Dartnell's truncated explanations are the way to go. Since growing conditions will vary so much from place to place, there is probably not much he could do otherwise; thus he provides the reader with the very basics. For agriculture, again, how to separate the wheat from the chaff, how to grind it into flour, etc. These are things that most members of our very specialized societies have forgotten how to do, either from leaving the tasks to machines, or to other people.

In a way, the book is sort of a wake-up call for the very "problem" of specialization -- a ton of people who each know how to do only a few very particular tasks, most of which (at least in industrialized societies) will not help them one whit in the face of even a temporary disaster, environmental or otherwise. Given how much I actually learned while reading this book, I was retrospectively shocked (or even ashamed) to realize just how much I did not know -- just how many things I use each day were/are the results of the labor and knowledge of others. So if anything, the book really does underscore the continuing necessity to form "well-rounded" individuals: those who can find/make/grow at least the bare necessities of living. Like any good book, it underscores the importance of things I often take for granted, and it makes me want to learn even more.

Apocalypse soon

I had expected this book to be a gedankenexperiment to determine if the technology underlying modern society can be reduced to a set of principles short enough to fit in one book and simple enough to be understood by one reader. Obviously it would take far more pages and complexity to record every detail of every process and device, but it is conceivable that essential knowledge could be organized into a tree that an isolated group of non-specialists could expand via research and tinkering into a functioning modern infrastructure.

The actual book is something different, but I'm not quite sure what it is. For one thing, this is no thought experiment, the author clearly expects some kind of catastrophic depopulation and social collapse (he mentions nuclear war and global pandemic as possibilities--the author is rooting for pandemic, I think because it damages only humans) or to be part of an inadequately supplied and badly trained exploration party (another planet or time travel on earth).

The first part of the book consists of the author's vivid descriptions of the apocalypse (his peaceful alternatives do not get the same attention). These are drawn from science fiction movies, sometimes explicitly, and as best I can tell, resemble no actual events. Plenty of cities have been abandoned (Pripyat is a particularly apt example) without conforming to the lurid sequences in the book. New Orleans after Katrina is cited as "a complete disintegration of law and order" and "the rapid degeneration of the normal social order and the outbreak of anarchy;" which leads the author to predict Mad Max scenarios. But none of this actually happened. There was tremendous official incompetence, but thousands of stories of small-scale heroism and altruism for every crime. The closest analogues to the author's nightmares outside Hollywood are genocidal pograms and civil wars--the product of organized groups with outside technology and resources, not scattered survivors of a holocaust stripped of their possessions.

Next the author gives his instructions for the immediate aftermath. The biggest problem here is his descriptions have nowhere near enough detail to be useful, and I'm pretty sure he's never actually tried any of the things he recommends. Any survival book, boy scouts handbook or camping manual will be far more help. Another problem is the eccentric coverage. He covers charcoal filtration, chemical treatment and sunlight disinfection of water (all of which require highly specific scavenging success and carry major risks) and suggests drinking from swimming pools and water heaters; but not collecting rainwater, drinking from wells or springs, or just going someplace with plenty of clean water.

Finally the book gets to the knowledge to rebuild the modern world. Here again there are no details, the author's main concern seems to be teaching the names of things, with a lot of attention to common English words derived from obsolete technology. Things are not arranged in any kind of order, for example his design for a primitive loom includes metal eyelets. Another issue is many of the technologies are not appropriate for the purpose. Norfolk crop rotation is described at length, but this is appropriate only for the south of England and was developed to allow intensive use of land to grow grain for export to other regions, using specialized equipment, optimized crops and animals and a highly trained labor force. A few thousand humans trying to rebuild modern society will have plenty of land and none of the prerequisites to make Norfolk rotation optimal. They might not be in the south of England (or if they started there might have decided to move to warmer climes to simplify survival). And in any case, they will have to solve their food production issues before building the infrastructure necessary to make grain export practical.

For all of those criticisms, this rebuilding part is reasonably interesting to read, and it represents the bulk of the book. If you think of it as essays on the history of technology loosely related to a survival theme, you should enjoy it and learn something. The writing is graceful and the author has an eye for interesting historical and scientific detail.

I can't recommend the book wholeheartedly to anyone. If you agree with the author's predictions of the future, you'll need a much better technology guide than this. If you don't, you'll find the first part of the book silly. If you want to learn how to scavenge food, shelter and water after a natural disaster, get a good survival book. If you're interested in history of technology and have already read everything by Henry Petroski, then perhaps you'll enjoy the last part of this book, if you overlook the apocalyptic stuff.
