The Princess and the Pea Meets the Bachelor

The reclusive margrave needs a wife and he needs one quickly. He enlists the help of newly weds Jorgen and Odette to help him find the perfect candidate. Despite his orders to marry in haste, he prefers to find a mate with whom he feels compatible—a real lady of culture and distinction who cares more about others than she does about fashion.

Odette suggests a house party with a series of tests for each potential bride that will help the margrave make an informed choice. The invitations go out and the festivities begin.

This time, though, the heroine comes from the serving class of a medieval fiefdom. Avalina, a beautiful young woman who has few choices about her destiny, lives in a society where everyone is kept strictly in his or her place.

Forced to perpetrate a lie and pretend to be a lady, she must navigate the medieval equivalent of "The Bachelor" while at the same time making sure that the Margrave of Thornbeck feels sympathetic towards her master, the Earl of Plimmwald, without taking any real interest in her.

Unfortunately, the Margrave seems to single her out for his attentions at the same time someone seems to single her out for cruel pranks. How long can Avalina live a lie before the truth is revealed, and just what makes a person a 'lady' or a gentleman?

Dickerson brings up the difficult questions that readers today face—culpability when one is coerced to act a certain way and forgiveness when we feel sinned against. How can a person reconcile his or her feelings with the call to forgive and forget and at what point can one break away from a past that threatens to destroy one’s future?

As always, I appreciate the beautiful balance between intrigue, characters with depth and gentle romance.

Good, but Not as Good as the First!

Reinhart, the Margrave of Thornbeck, is advised by a king to find a wife. He invites noble women from around the country to come to his castle to which which of them will be his wife. Avelina is a maidservant of Lady Dorothea of Plimmwald. When Lady Dorothea is summoned to go to Thornbeck Castle to be a possible bride for the Margrave, she flees with her lover. Not wanting to offend the margrave, the Earl of Plimmwald orders Avelina to stand in his daughter’s place. Avelina doesn’t wish for anyone to find out her real identity and tries to linger in the background so she wouldn’t be notice. However, due to her wit and compassion, Avelina stands out among the crowd and catches Reinhart’s eye. What will happen once Reinhart discovers Avelina’s secret? Will they learn to love each other despite her deception? Could Reinhart marry for love instead of duty?

Avelina is a loveable character. She is caring, compassionate, and a loyal friend. She is very romantic and naive. She is very opinionated and cares about women’s rights. I found her character to be very similar to Odette in how they both share their compassion for the poor and are very loyal friends. I like how Avelina doesn’t wish to fall in love with Reinhart, but she unexpectedly does anyway. She loves him unconditionally and is willing to go to many lengths to save him.

Reinhart, on the other hand, I did not like him. I thought he was a jerk, and he did mean things to Avelina once he learned her secret. I didn’t see how Avelina could still love and forgive after the things he has done. Honestly, I think that she deserved better. Throughout, the novel, Reinhart comes across as snobby. He was also a very weak character and was blind to the villains throughout the novel.

Overall, this book was about love, friendship, and trust. Avelina’s character was fleshed out, but Reinhart needed more development to make me like him. He didn’t completely changed after falling in love with Avelina. While the plot was fast-paced, the action was lacking. There was no action in this book. While the bad guys invaded his home, the two main characters both hid until they were rescued. The author gave the characters a safety net and didn’t put them in the throw of the danger. Thus, I found the climax of the story to be very weak and a letdown. The relationship between Reinhart and Avelina seems to be very unconvincing. I did not like them as much as Jorgen and Odette for they were a much more believable couple. While I did not like the main couple, I did like the supporting characters. Jorgen and Odette were fun characters and very mischievous. I loved their schemes in helping Reinhart choose his perfect bride. Magdalen, Avelina’s friend, was a very caring woman who did not care about people’s station in life. I look forward to reading the next novel, The Noble Servant, because it will have Magdalen as its protagonist. Thus, I recommend this to fans of Kiera Cass’s The Selection, Jody Hedlund’s An Uncertain Choice, and Richelle Mead’s The Glittering Court. However, The Huntress of Thornbeck is a stronger novel than The Beautiful Pretender for it has a believable romance and engaging characters.

Although he is the most powerful man in the region, the margrave is powerless to refuse the need for a bride and it must happen in 2 weeks. In order to choose a worthy bride, he and his advisors cook up a plan to invite ten noble ladies (whom the king approves) and test them.

When the Earl of Plimmwald cannot send his wayward daughter to the margrave, he chooses to send Avelina, her maidservant, in her stead. Avelina must be respectful but not allow the margrave to notice her. She tries her best to avoid scrutiny but despite her best efforts, the margrave still continues to notice and favor her. When lives are endangered, can Avelina and the margrave figure out who's behind it in time to save lives? Can Avelina deny her feelings for the margrave? What will happen to her once the truth is discovered?

I am such a HUGE fan of Melanie Dickerson and her fairy tale romances. She is incredibly talented in writing historical fiction and I can never put her books down. I found this story not just romantic but fun, interesting, and exciting to read. I loved the two main characters and how they interacted. I can relate to the search for love and wanting to test another's character.

You won't want to miss this book. Although this book is the second in the series, you can read this one as a standalone, but the first book in the series is also a fun read, which I would also highly recommend.

No new content, no new inspiration.

I forced myself to finish reading it. I tried to like it. I really tried! Out of a profound respect for Michael Hyatt's past work, I forced myself to finish this. I was bored and disappointed, right to the very last page.

The basic message of the book is, write your goals, get your priorities straight, schedule time for what's important and be consistent in saying no to stuff that isn't important. It seemed to me that the book was an attempt to condense or replicate co-author David Harkavy's workshops on life planning. The book starts out with a call to write your own eulogy, with an emphasis on identifying how you want to be remembered. If having a good eulogy--or any eulogy--is important to you, this might be a helpful exercise, but otherwise, it's a big clue about how little the book offers to the rest of us.

Each author tells several stories about his ups and downs in life. I can recall only one of those stories, so they didn't resonate with me. At the end of the book is a huge pitch for Harkavy's workshop. I honestly believe this workshop could be effective in person, but as a DIY activity rolled into book, it didn't speak to me at all. I bought an overpriced, too-lengthy audio series by Tony Robbins a few years ago, and every day I'm still struggling to implement all that Tony suggests, but he was very inspiring and gave some nitty-gritty advice on how to stop drifting. I couldn't find either in the Hyatt/Harkavy book.

I've finally learned to be skeptical of the 5-start reviews for books written by popular bloggers. The first flood of 5-star reviews always seem to come from the blogger's tribe. Their tribe can't get enough of what they have to say. (Which is why I bought this book, because I'm a Hyatt fan!) But that doesn't mean other readers will resonate with the book's message. The 5-start review used to represent the general readership, but now, it's just a reflection of the author's tribe supporting him.

When I first heard about this book, I did not immediately jump on it as I have been engaged in 5-year planning, annual goal setting and other great visionary guidance on living intentionally for 30+ years. I am a believer in this concept and have seen wonderful results in my life. What more could there be except to continue with what I was doing? However, when I was allowed to read an advance copy of the book, I was excited. Wow. This is a whole new level of what I had been doing - sleek and streamlined. It flows easily while dealing with profound truths in a way that draw you in. It pulls you into engagement with the one most precious gift we have; One's life. I could hardly wait to get away on retreat (which I did) and write my life plan. It enabled me to pull together the bits and pieces of previous planning, which I had thought was pretty clear, into a simple cohesive clear plan. By the time I got to the nuts and bolts of the process I was so inspired, it seemed easy (well almost, after all you are planning your life!). The tools provided saved so much time and mental energy that doing this in ONE day was achievable. ONE day to define one's life. What a gift. There is a chapter for those who have businesses that provides reason to share this on a wider level. As someone who has retired from one great career and working on another, this will come in handy at some time in the future. The process and tools provided are simple, clear and effective. I now have a life plan for the second half of my life. This book will work for any one from high school age and on.

Living Forward starts out by addressing THE DRIFT.

The DRIFT is the tendency to arrive at destinations you don’t consciously choose. The DRIFT is facing life in a reactive way and happens when you’re:

1.) Unaware
2.) Distracted
3.) Overwhelmed
4.) Deceived

No one wakes up and says, “Today I want to DRIFT.” However, if you’re not living a life according to design, then you’re living a life according to DRIFT.

So how do you change direction and snap out of the DRIFT? Michael Hyatt and Daniel Harkavy reveal that the average person spends 5 hours researching and shopping for a new car. The average bride-to-be spends 40 days planning a three-hour wedding. However, the average person never spends 1 day planning his or her life.

Good exposition

This is a good bridge between a basic intro stats book and a more difficult mathematical stats book (e.g. Rice's Mathematical Statistics). It gives some (but not all) of the proofs to key results, without skipping over a lot of steps like some higher level texts. In addition, the writing is more explanatory and seeks to convey the intuition better than some other books. I recommend this textbook.

The most boring-looking stats book you can imagine, but also the most useful I've used. The right balance of theory and practicality for a doctoral student in a non-stats field, who nevertheless needs to understand the topic. The bland and dense layout belies a remarkably accessible text. Don't be intimidated!

About the Author
Ivan Tselichtchev is professor at the Niigata University of Management in Japan since 1994. He graduated from Moscow University in 1979 and joined Russia’s leading think tank, the Institute of World Economy and International Relations. He got his Ph.D. in 1983 and became Senior Researcher in 1984. Tselichtchev is the author of four books and co-author of many others. He has written more than 200 articles on the Asian, Japanese, Russian and international economy as well as on international politics, in English, Japanese and Russian. In 2005, the Committee of the Cabinet Office of the Government of Japan named Tselichtchev Seikatsu Tatsujin (A Master of Life) which means a person with outstanding achievements and lifestyle.


Philippe Debroux is a Belgian national and for over 30 years resident in Japan. He holds an MBA from INSEAD and a Ph.D. from Brussels University. He began his career in a Japanese company before entering academic life in the mid-1980s. He has since developed a successful career as a professor of business in Japan, Vietnam, Belgium and France while continuing in-depth field research focused on developments in human resource management, innovation and entrepreneurship in Japan and other Asian countries. His substantial experience in both business life and academic research give his work a particular cachet. Effectively combining theory and practice, his books and articles make a valuable contribution to our understanding of Asia.

Valuable Resource for Business in Asia

As a regional director in Asia, I have found this book to be a valuable resource for business. Asian economies are so different (e.g., Japan's per capita GDP is about 50 times that of Vietnam's) that a one-size-fits-all approach will not work. So you need to tailor things, and to do that, you need to know what is going on in the different economies. That is where this book comes in very handy as a primer: the introductory chapters spell out regional trends, and the chapters on the individual countries in the region, each 10-20 pages in length, that give you the essentials quickly. One small thing I wish the authors had included is a list of recommended readings for deeper exploration of the individual countries, but that is a minor point greatly outweighed by the merits of the book.

Global View on East-Asian Economies

Reading Asia's Turning Point taught me a lot. Not having an economic background, I might not have gotten everything it had to say, nevertheless it has made me more aware of the economic realities of Asia at the start of this century.
The authors also show how the free market logic progressively penetrates the business world and management habits, generally for the better, but not without its trail of environmental and social challenges.
With almost fifteen countries covered, the book gives a wide panorama of the East-Asian economies. Not only does it provide a general picture, it also gives precise figures and references. This makes it a valuable guide for business people interested in entering the East-Asian market.

This book has a lot of interesting facts. It is quite detailed and covers the entire region for the most part. I think a little more on the history of the countries and a bit about their politics should have been included. overall not a bad book, but nothing special.

Reading it was like discovering the missing puzzle pieces in my life! I want to buy this book for everyone I know! He helped provide insight to areas I'd just learned to gloss over - "Oh, THAT's why I react that way!" It's easy to read, easy to apply and wonderfully thought-provoking. GREAT!

Small business guru and best-selling author Gerber is an enthusiastic champion of small business owners, and his constant cheering underlies this latest attempt to provide a comprehensive plan for entrepreneurial success. The key messages here are similar to those of his previous books (The E-Myth Revisited, etc.): that "knowing how to do the work of a business has nothing to do with building a business that works"; that entrepreneurs learn their skills through practice, practice, practice; and that anyone willing to adopt that same kind of discipline can be successful too. These principles are sound and practical, but Gerber's articulation of them is often cloying. His book relies heavily on Platonic dialogues with his 'student' Sarah, the ever misty-eyed owner of a business called All About Pies. But the quasi-romantic tenor of their conversations is irritating. Equally distracting is Gerber's impassioned mid-book confession detailing how even as he was succeeding as a small business guru, he was being sued for fraud, teetering on the brink of bankruptcy and seriously not in control of his own far-from-excellent small company. While this confession lends credibility to his knowledge-he has personally been to the brink of small business failure and back-it may plant seeds of doubt within skeptical readers. But, ultimately, those who overlook this skepticism and plow through the soul-searching assignments that make up the first 66 pages of the book will be rewarded. For Gerber's volume provides a wealth of practical guidelines, charts, forms (available online) and instructions on how to run, improve and manage a business of any size. And, by the end, readers will feel as though they've been given a full course of one-on-one coaching sessions with Gerber. For all its flaws, this is a book with a business plan that anyone could implement...and should want to.

The Cult of Michael Gerber

Well, I really wanted to like this book. I own Gerber's other E-Myth products and I was looking for a main course, some meat after the fluffy appetizer in the other books. I was very disappointed. While Gerber is a very intelligent man with wisdom and alot of insights, he loves to tell longwinded stories that don't enhance the material. After reading this book you will almost be convinced that Gerber was paid by the word. Gerber's essential idea is that most small business owners work "in their business" and not "on their business" and how they should systematize and build a "franchise prototype" so that the business runs efficiently.

You will also find out that this product is a lead in to signing up with a coach at the E-Myth Mastery website if you want some real "meat and potatoes."

I am convinced that if I plunked down the dollars needed for one of Gerber's coaches, I would probably be dealing with a low paid employee that is using Gerber's "operations manual" as he teaches that your business should be able to be run by low level employees that work the business systems.

I also get the feeling that if I did sign up for Gerber's coaching, I would probably be lead to sign up for a month long summit with Michael Gerber on some Polynesian island where all of the real secrets will be finally revealed.

While the principles in all of the books are sound, it is tantamount to telling you to look both ways when crossing the street and then telling you the hows, whens and whys of looking before crossing the street and drawing out the importance through example and story telling when you got the message in the first sentence. Enough, what is on the other side of the street? You won't find out in this book.

Do yourself a favor. Buy the E-Myth Revisited, learn the basic principles and then use your own mind and gut to lead you to the next level. I have a feeling that there are many entrepreneurs that get sucked into the "Cult of Michael Gerber" and roam the Earth searching endlessly for some specific information about how they can apply Gerber's principles to their business. I wish those lonely wanderers good luck.

This is a taste of the consulting program

I am a former E-Myth client that became an E-Myth coach for awhile. I completed the E-Myth Mastery program a few years ago and implemented it in my business along the way.

What is taught is basic stuff, but the hard part is implementation. This book isn't going to be an entertaining read as much as it is a book of tools. This book goes into more detail of "how to" than the first book. "The E-Myth Revisited" was basically about the "E-Myth Point-of-view". Great stuff. If you get that, then you can approach this book with the right attitude.

What is in this book is some of what I received as a client. The good stuff was in the implementation of the concepts. The implementation takes discipline and persistence. It doesn't always work the way you'd like at first, but that is the point. Get the structure in place for continual improvement. It isn't sexy, but it works. The difference is, you implement it, not a consultant. If a consultant implements it, things go back to the way they were when the consultant is gone, and so do the results.

I have a business degree, and I found the Mastery program to be more valuable (in the sense of getting results) than my college degree. The results don't come overnight, but at least I knew what to do to get ideas implemented. That is the value of the consulting program, having a coach that you can use for accountability in doing what you need to do to get results.

I have the book, and use it for reference, along with my Mastery Consulting binders that come with the program. This stuff works if you know how to implement it. Once you learn that, you won't need any management consultants.

Those who criticize this book are missing the point. It is the attitude they come with, that determines how good it is for them. Most people want someone else to get their results for them, and have some magic formula that doesn't exist. If you come to this with the right point-of-view, to be a learner, you will get far more than your money's worth. If you decide it isn't going to work, you'll make it come true.

I paid thousands of dollars for the information that is published in this book. I still think it was worth it - much more than the sexy management consulting firms that courted me and promised results I knew they couldn't get, and charged as much as 10 times what the E-Myth Academy charged.
