"Big Data" is it SMART or are you SMART- ask Bernard Marr

Although I have always worked with Engineers and Software professionals in many techn ical areas and Industries I am not a Technical person, but I read and am able to comprend or to pick up the nuances of the particular Industry.

How and why SMART decisions are based on SMART analytics

Much of what I know about "big data" and analytics I have learned from Tom Davenport and again I express my deep gratitude to him. In addition, I have read several dozen books by other authors on one or more aspects of one or both subjects and have learned much of value from them, also. I now share four convictions based on what I have learned thus far. First, the name of the game is not Big Data. Rather, it is having a sufficient quantity of the right data. Also, even then, enough of the right data is essentially worthless unless and until they guide and inform (a) the right decisions and (b) effective execution of those decisions. Also, all right data are important but some are more valuable than others. Finally, the relevance, importance, value, and sufficiency of data can change, sometimes significantly.

For more than two decades, at least since Tim Berners-Lee devised the concept of a worldwide web, business leaders have been struggling to identify their companies' information needs and then fill them. These are critically important decisions. In recent years, this process has been facilitated, indeed expedited by various electronic technologies, so that better decisions can be made and then executed much faster than ever before.

I agree with Bernard Marr: "The marriage of data and technology is radically changing our world and making it smarter. And business much become smarter too...Today the really successful companies understand where their customers are and, perhaps more importantly, what they are doing and where they are going. They know what is happening as it's happening and they allow that information to guide their strategy and inform their decision-making. Companies that don't embrace the SMART revolution will be left behind." Quite true.

Marr introduces this acronym, SMART, for the business model he recommends:

S = Start with strategy
M = Measure metric s and data
A = Apply analytics
R = Report results
T = Transform business

He devotes a separate chapter to each component of the model. Once again, I agree with Bernard Marr: "SMART business is a solution that encourages us all to step back from the hype and noise around data - especially Big Data - and take stock of where we are, where we are trying to get to and what data and tools we can employ to get there...One thing is for sure, Big Data and analytics are here to stay and it's only going to get more sophisticated. We need to embrace it, operate it effectively, deliver value in exchange for the data and apply its significant benefits for the betterment of our world."

Business leaders who are determined to help their organizations use smart big data analytics and metrics to make better decisions and improve performance will find in this volume almost all that they need to pursue that immensely important strategic objective.

Easy to read and well written - A must have for your libray

Bernard knows Big Data. I love the SMART approach he takes in presenting the concept and use of Big Data. The acronym SMART has been used with different meaning in numerous environments with great success. SMART in my world of simulation meant Simulation and Modeling for Acquisition, Research and Training. I designed class rooms using SMART (the company) technology. Bernard has done a SMART thing with Big Data, for he is very SMART. With all fun aside, this is a must read for anyone who wants to learn about Big Data. Written in plain language, well organized with ample graphical aids, I am sure you will love it.

I would completely disregard the one and two star ratings (one each). They are entitled to their wrong opinion. Perhaps they should try to write a book that all audiences can take in. It is difficult to do and Bernard has done it very well.

Through personal anecdotes and compelling stories ranging from topics such as Christmas and birthday gifts, shopping malls, Toys-R-Us, neighborhood convenience shops, school lunches, ethnically correct toys, and school supplies, Chin critically examines consumption as a medium through which social inequalities -- most notably of race, class, and gender -- are formed, experienced, imposed, and resisted. Along the way she acknowledges the profound constraints under which the poor and working class must struggle in their daily lives.

A Review of Elizabeth Chin's Purchasing Power

When faced with the concept of "Black Kids and American Consumer Culture," I immediately turn my thoughts to the image of African American males killing each other for a specific brand of basketball shoe. Conversely, Elizabeth Chin defeats this myth of "combat consumerism" in her recent ethnographic study Purchasing Power. By studying a group of young African American children in Newhallville, Connecticut, Chin develops and explains a new brand of consumer culture that many previous anthropologists fail to recognize. Chin's research contradicts the stereotypical images in society and those portrayed by the media. She defines a new image of African American youth consumer culture-one that goes against commodity fetishism and the need for brand name goods. She discovers one that deals with the harsh world of being poor and black where opportunity and survival are major factors of consumer culture. Chin demonstrates the complexity of this issue by displaying how it is woven in with and affected by society. In this way, she relates consumerism to social injustices, race relations, class diversity, gender differences, cultural baggage and social relationships. Thus, Elizabeth Chin's book Purchasing Power is an informative and profound piece that intrigues the reader with an alternative image of Black Kids and American Consumer Culture.
Throughout her book, Elizabeth Chin does a tremendous job of blending anthropological research information (both others' and her own), and her engaging style of prose writing. This is evident from the onset of the book. In her first two chapters, Chin not only effectively conveys the purpose and results of her work (pp. 4-6), but also does so in a way that the reader is intrigued by the personal stories she tells about the children she interviewed in Newhallville. Her ongoing connections between theories and real life issues with Asia, Natalia, and Tionna are especially strong at the beginning of the book. In this way, readers are compelled to not only understand Chin's idea of the consumer sphere as a medium for social inequality (p. 23), but also to learn and discover what consumer life is like for the specific children interviewed.
In chapter two, Shadow of Whiteness, Chin briefly relates several different ideas from theorists such as Marx, Willis, Genovese and Fisk to her work. For some readers who are less familiar with these pieces, this section might seem somewhat confusing and a little burdensome. In this situation, more background information on the main ideas of the theorists' works would have been helpful. However, one must understand that Chin's overall purpose of the book is not to explain previous anthropological research, but to explain how her participant-observer approach to her ethnographic study of Newhallville children is important to consumer culture.
Chin's Shadow of Whiteness chapter is also very strong with the discussion of similarities between slavery and present-day consumerism. Chin illustrates how current stereotypical attitudes of black consumption have been deeply rooted in society since the time of slavery. Her discussion of slave fashion (pp. 39-41) is especially powerful and affective to her argument. Chin could easily build upon her ideas in this section and create a more in-depth anthropological comparison.
A final section in chapter two that was particularly strong was the analysis of "combat consumerism" and how society feeds on hyperbolized media stories and fraudulent police theories. Chin states several stories of juvenile violence where the media has portrayed the youth criminals as extremely brutal because of trivial material goods desired. Chin's reaction to this societal phenomenon is valid and influential in her overall argument of the book. Chin forcefully conveys her point when she writes,
The understanding that kids like those profiled above are somehow typical combat consumers not only misreads their consumer patterns at material levels but misinterprets the social impact and genesis of these patterns. It is a portrayal tapping a particularly insidious American myth: that the poor are highly susceptible to commodity fetishism, that they are addicted to brands, and that they are willing to acquire expensive things even at the cost of their own (or someone else's) health and/or well-being. Connected to this idea is a whole rat's nest of assumptions about poverty, money, and consumption: that the poor are poor primarily due to their own lack of discipline and self-control; that the poor do not know how to economize or prioritize expenses; and that the commitment of the poor to consume somehow ends up costing "us," whether through crime, welfare, dependency, teenage motherhood; that these depravities lead to murder, drugs, sex crimes. (pp. 56-57)
At this point in her book, Chin returns her focus to her work with the Newhallville children. A common theme begins to come forth throughout the next few chapters. Chin does a tremendous job of demonstrating how social relationships influence consumption. This is first evident in her section on "School Lunch," and later in the accounts of shopping sprees where children decided to spend money on family members. These sections have vast similarities to previous anthropological research on kinship and reciprocity, especially those who have completed fieldwork like Malinowski's research on the Kula. Chin could have enhanced her argument by examining the similarities in the research. In this way, Chin could have been able to generalize that the young African Americans in Newhallville are not a special case of consumer culture, but share similar characteristics of other cultures and societies.
As briefly stated in the previous paragraph, the idea of generalization seems to be one point that Chin fails to address adequately in her book. Although her research focuses on Newhallville children, it would not be out of her anthropological context to try and generalize from her results. Since she fails to sufficiently generalize her ideas, the sub-title of her book is resultantly problematic. Chin blatantly states that Purchasing Power will pertain to "Black Kids and American Consumer Culture." With Chin's choice to write specifically on black Newhallville kids, she consequently should not place them in the category of all black kids without stating the possible similarities or differences.
Further research topics that should have been considered in Purchasing Power that would have enhanced the overall argument would have been to interview different ages of children. The choice of using third and fourth grade children might have been a slightly young age to examine. Unlike the Newhallville children, I personally grew up in an upper-middle class family in a middle-class community. However, at this age I did not really understand consumerism and what I truly desired. I found myself purchasing many material goods for other people, similar to the children in Chin's study. Chin possibly decided to use this age group because this could be a truer form of consumer culture, one before society was able to taint consumer choices. An older group of children might have been affected more by society. In either case, using different age groups would still be an interesting anthropological research topic to consider.
One final idea that would enhance the study would be to examine how a child from a socioeconomic situation like Newhallville would react when placed in a different socioeconomic position. For example, would his or her consumerism change when placed in the care of a family who was from a higher-class community? Would the child then begin to find commodity fetishism and the need for brand name goods important? Today in my small town community of Lewistown, Pennsylvania, many families host foster children. It is an amazing phenomenon to witness how children from lower class cities adapt to the consumer culture of the majority middle class population. They begin to shift their priority of buying necessary, conservative items to buying higher-priced brand name goods.
Overall, Elizabeth Chin's recent book Purchasing Power is an intriguing and thoughtful book that displays a different type of consumer culture. Unlike many previous anthropological studies and the media, her research shows how commodity fetishism and brand name goods do not dominant lower socioeconomic children of Newhallville, Connecticut. Instead there is often a great deal of prioritizing and economic discipline with their consumer choices. Furthermore, the social injustices, race relations, class diversity, gender differences, and social relationships around them shape their consumer culture. Chin uses an informative, yet almost amusing style of writing that effectively develops her argument. Although there are several areas in which her book could have been stronger, her ethnographic work with the children is tremendous and well worth the reader's time. Definitely a good read!

I only purchased this book because I needed it for my intro anthropology class, but after reading it, I've decided to integrate into my personal book collection instead of selling it to another student. It isn't the most life changing book that I've ever read, but it does do a great deal of exploring the dynamics of agency and privilege within the lives of the children that it follows. Furthermore, it opens up a broader discussion of how these two concepts work in the lives of black people and lower income people as a whole in relation. Everyone should read this book, whether they're an aspiring social justice worker or if they don't believe inequality exists. Either way, it will offer you a broader perspective toward how you view the lives of others in the world and how you view your own.

William Hazlitt (10 April 1778 – 18 September 1830) was an English writer, remembered for his humanistic essays and literary criticism, and as an art critic, drama critic, social commentator, and philosopher. Great Hymnal

This is a great all around hymnal. It has such favorites as "Great Is Thy Faithfulness", "Amazing Grace", "O, For a Thousand Tongues to Sing", "Sweet Hour of Prayer", as well as some newer type songs like Andrae Crouch's "Through It All", and "My Tribute", and Michael W. Smith's "How Majestic Is Your Name". It contains a wide selection of Easter and Chrismas hymns, many favorites. I even noticed a couple of "Glorias" in it. With over 600 pages of hymns and readings this is a terrific hymnal for any congregation, or for personal devotional time. It is a reasonable price, too. I highly recommend it.

Meaningful and Nostalgic

It seems that, in nondenominational churches, the old hymns are being phased out. I got this hymnal for strictly personal application, as a sentimental link to my childhood in churches where these hymns were sung and appreciated. This includes so many of my childhood and teen favorites, and the words are such a blessing, always applicable, not just for "then"!

Brilliance is giving away the ending in the 1st sentence & still making people want to read it

"Once upon a time there lived in Berlin, Germany, a man called Albinus. He was rich, respectable, happy; one day he abandoned his wife for the sake of a youthful mistress; he loved; was not loved; and his life ended in disaster."

This is the first paragraph of Laughter in the Dark. Nabokov gives us the synopsis, even the end of the book, right at the beginning. Then starts the simple, yet beautiful narration of a lethal obsession. The sad story of a man who can be very reasonable about every aspect of life unless it has got anything to do with his youthful mistress. When it comes to the 18-year-old femme fatale, he is void of all logic and sense, and cruel to those whom he once loved.

It is impossible to give a summary of the book without giving away its twists and turns, and there are quite a few of them. Here is how one of the main characters react to a divergence in the story:

"A certain man once lost a diamond cuff-link in the wide blue sea, and twenty years later, on the exact day, a Friday apparently, he was eating a large fish - but there was no diamond inside. That's what I like about coincidence."

Nabokov's writing is uncomplicated, sincere and very engrossing. Once started, I couldn't put it down. When I finished the book late last night, I was so shaken that I couldn't go to sleep. I was at once entranced and disturbed by the book. Entranced by Nabokov's ability to sustain the suspense of a story he so shrewdly summarizes at the very beginning. Disturbed by the fact that such obsessions are real and in existence.

Tragic but amuzing

No need for a lengthy review here, this book was amazing. Nabakov gives you the whole story in the first few sentences then leads you down this man's spiral to his demise. Tragic but wonderful. I would call it a must read.

Masterful Horror Story

Actually, no need for a spoilers alert since Nabokov proceeds to tell us the entire plot in the first paragraph. By this ingenious opening, the interest is no longer in what's going to happen so much as how. Also, the interest comes in learning the specific details to what is a common story.

This novel reminded me of Josef Von Sternberg's film The Blue Angel (1930) which came out two years earlier. It is almost cinematic with its short scenes and chapters, its concise use of imagery, and its pithy dialogue.

Reading it, I couldn't help but admire the masterful use of prose while at the same time watching a train hurtling towards a cliff.

Lastly, I found Margot and Rex to be frightening characters, especially Rex with his depravity.

This book presents revealing stories of coverups in many fields, including medicine, alternate energy resources, archaeology, NASA, UFOs, etc. Many books and articles have been written through the years on these subjects, but I am grateful to the author for his well-researched, well-written compilation of so many of them into one source. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in educating themselves about how scientific arrogance and corporate greed have contributed to the steady decline of life on this planet. Nikola Tesla's ideas alone would have spared us many of the ecological disasters we now face. This book deserves 5 stars plus for its disclosure of the years of disinformation we have been given on matters of so much importance to us all.

Fantastic and informative. I deeply regret that such candid and informational literature can arouse such horrible feelings of depression in the reader, while encouraging avoidance of clossing the book. Everyone on earth should be required to read this book in highschool and again in college.

About the Author

Jerome Skolnick, a sociologist, currently teaches at the New York University School of Law where he is Co-Director of the Center for Research in Crime and Justice. He is also Claire Clements Dean’s Professor emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was Chair of the Center for the Study of Law and Society. He has written many books and articles and has received numerous grants, honors and awards in recognition of his research and scholarship. These include the August Vollmer award of the American Society of Criminology; awards for distinguished scholarship from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and the Western Society of Criminology; the Mills award of the Society for the Study of Social Problems (for Justice Without Trial); election to the honorary Sociological Research Association; and a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship. He was Director of the Task Force on Violent Protest and Confrontation of the  National Commission on the Causes and Prevention of Violence, Washington, D.C. 1968-1969 and served as President of the American Society of Criminology from November 1993 through November 1994. In 1997, he completed a three year term as Chair of the National Academy of Science/ National Research Council's Committee on Law and Justice. In 1996 he was honored by John Jay College of Criminal Justice as their Criminal Justice Educator of the Year.

 

Elliott Currie is Professor of Criminology, Law, and Society at the University of California, Irvine. He has also taught in the Legal Studies Program at the University of California, Berkeley, and in the Board of Studies in Sociology at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Professor Currie is the author of many works on crime, juvenile delinquency, drug abuse and social policy, including Confronting Crime (1985), Dope and Trouble: Portraits of Delinquent Youth (1991), Reckoning: Drugs, the Cities, and the American Future (1993), and Crime and Punishment in America (1998), which was a finalist for the 1999 Pulitzer Prize in General Nonfiction. He is a coauthor of Whitewashing Race: the Myth of a Colorblind America (2003), a finalist for the C. Wright Mills award of the Society for the Study of Social Problems in 2004 and winner of the 2004 Book Award from the Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change. His most recent book is The Road to Whatever: Middle Class Culture and the Crisis of Adolescence (2005), a study of troubled middle-class youth in America. He has been a consultant to many organizations concerned with crime prevention, social policy, and the enhancement of juvenile and criminal justice, both in the United States and overseas, including the National Council on Crime and Delinquency, the National Advisory Council on Economic Opportunity, the California Governor’s Task Force on Civil Rights, and the Home Office of Great Britain.  He is the recipient of numerous awards, including both the Donald Cressey Award and the Prevention for a Safer Society (PASS) Award from the National Council on Crime and Delinquency, and, most recently, the August Vollmer Award of the American Society of Criminology.

Answers Are Presented Right Beside the Questions. Ugg!

Looking to learn medical coding after 25 years in a different area of healthcare. There are two versions of this book, one with answers and one without. The problem with the answers version is the author/publisher includes the answers right beside the question. Now I have to preemptively take sticky notes and cover the answers for the questions throughout the huge book. Perhaps the author/publisher could place the answers on their website and just sell a single No Answers version starting in 2017. This issue was not well thought out at all. Hoping the book still serves me well despite this issue.

I miss Faye Brown and ICD 9

I bought this for reference material to make sure I am coding correctly since I am new to ICD10 (as are we all). I did prefer the Faye Brown format because they took coding guidelines and broke them down into lessons so that by the time you completed the workbook, you have a good handle on coding guidelines. This new format is the replacement for Faye Brown. It's just broken down differently because ICD10 is broken down differently from ICD9 and they are just trying to meet that need. I am sure I will get used to it. I am just glad to have it.

The book came promptly and in good shape. However I wish there was another book to learn from for my courses. The author is quite often incoherent, and sometimes the sentence structures leave me baffled. I figure them out but I wonder how they made it past editing. After all, in a book, and subject, that makes repeated statements on the need for accuracy, this book contains far too many errors.

To name merely two (of many). On page 424 after explanation of coronary artery bypass grafting the author states: "All coronary bypass procedures do not involve the aorta." What? First, it sounds like the twisted sentences that obtain during introduction classes of logic covering the syllogism. I think the author means to say that not all coronary bypass procedures involve the aorta. On page 419, 2nd paragraph, a reference is made to a seventh character value in Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy - it is the 6th character.

Luckily by this point I am used to such errors and no longer freak out.

The author also has a penchant for convoluted structures while using multiple procedural main terms, root operations, like repair, replacement or revision as normal words while also using them as main terms. Many times I have had to parse out and diagram a sentence or paragraph just to get it untangled and then rewrite it myself so it is understandable English.

Otoh, I can't imagine it was easy to write a guide book to the mash that is ICD 10, so I will be fair and give it 3 stars. If you get lost in the book though, you will have to find your own way out. I have called my school about confusions a number of times and have got contradictory answers to questions, to silences, to stuttering er... uh.... um. That would be because not only is ICD 10 is ridiculously mammoth (some 155,000 codes for both diagnosis and procedure) and abstract (particularly the procedural coding) but because your teachers haven't used it in a real world setting yet either!
