It's sweet

I read this in little over three hours,its a easy read and very sweet not super over the top with the unrealistic.Leigh is a cool girl because she has been recently left alone and instead of letting depression fall upon her she remakes her house as a way to be constructive.Nick is a good guy who is trying to show Leigh she is not alone in the world.

This was a cute story of finding the love that had been inside them for years as co workers. The man standing by her side was great. There is a tornado that does not belong out is just randomly thrown in here right after a snow and ice storm and I found that part totally out of place and unnecessary.

When a five-year-old boy’s Christmas list includes a cannon and a battleship, it’s not a big surprise that he winds up being a tough guy. Marvin was a tough guy in life—he fought in WWII—and on the big screen (although his first wife said he was “a bowl of mashed potatoes” in private). Epstein’s biography of the star of Cat Ballou, The Dirty Dozen, and Point Blank (whence the book’s title) tracks the actor’s life from his early years to his death in 1987. It’s a good Hollywood bio, focusing on its subject’s public and private lives without descending into the sort of gossip and rumor that typify many celebrity life stories. Almost all the interviews for the book date from the middle to late 1990s, suggesting that the majority of the preliminary work was done quite a while ago. A lengthier appraisal of Marvin’s film legacy might have made the book feel more current, but that’s a minor quibble. This is the kind of biography Lee Marvin deserves, even if it feels like it sat on a shelf for a long time. --David Pitt

A good book on an important actor

Dwayne EPSTEIN uses the same technique as Cornelius Ryan (A bridge too far, The longest day): take as many interviews as you can and weave them into a story. It is well done, very honest and it certainly involved a lot of research and work.
Lee Marvin is unjustly forgotten, probably because he played so many cowboys and criminals in B movies. He was an intelligent man and a very modern actor at the rise of method acting; he was born the same year as Marlon Brando. He had that rare gift: if he had only one sentence to say, he would make of it the center piece of the film. He also was a dark man with the dark hero appeal of many movies after WW2 and the Vietnam War. His fame years range from Cat Ballou and the beautiful but difficult movie Ship Of Fools [HD] (with all the best actors of the day) in 1965 to Gorky Park in 1983.
The book makes little concession to the hero. It seems that every time Lee Marvin was drunk, somebody remembers it, and it is the book. A real hero of World War 2, Marvin suffered from post traumatic stress disorder, which was mostly ignored and untreated at the time.
This leaves us pondering some miserable moments, such as this. Marvin asks for a divorce, telling his wife: "This is nothing personal, but I don't want to be married anymore". His wife rightfully answered "I wish you would have told me this four children ago."

The one and only...............

My mum was a Lee Marvin fan and I followed suit, I have read Pamela Marvin's and Betty Marvin's biographies, along with Donald Zec, and Robert Lentz account of his films and career, I watched Hollywood s Straight shooter video and John Boorman's video account of Lee's life but it's Dwayne Epstien who brings the real Lee to life. Point Blank took Dwayne 20 years to write and it shows the pains he has taken to get it right. The front cover draws you to look inside and explore more on one of the greatest bad men of the movies, Christopher Marvin, Lee's son also gives his blessing to the book as he fondly remembers the man who was a movie star but also a very affectionate father, he explains about the precious times he had with his dad and how they spent time together and activities they enjoyed together, after reading the book it brought back many fond memories of his dad. I love the book and enjoy the way Dwayne has used quotes from Lee himself, e.g. Chapter six Lee describes himself as a trouble shooter, and in roles no one else knew what to do with. The pictures in the book give you a feel of how Lee grew up, showing clearly how proud he was to have been a US Marine, and how he developed his career, showing the many faces of Lee bringing even more life to the book. This book also shows the dedication of admirers and fans as it talks of the Bastard son of Lee Marvin, keeping the legend alive. Dwayne explains all the important dates from the birth of Lee's mum in 1896 to Lee's death in 1987 a true history from start to finish, listing films he could have made in fact this book is not just a biography it's an encyclopaedia on Lee Marvin. You don't have to be a fan to read this book, film buffs need to give it a read, if you enjoy a good biography give it a go, I have already soaked up every page and I intend to do it again very soon, once I started I couldn't put it down, start to finish in eighteen hours I just had to carry on. Thank you Dwayne Epstein for bringing LEE MARVIN back to life, as far as I'm concerned this book is the one and only Lee Marvin story............

A must read for any Lee Marvin fan

This book completes my biographical trifecta on Lee Marvin.

When reading a celebrity biography, the first thing I look for is whether or not the author has respect for the subject. This is usually apparent within the first five pages of any book. Most biographies fail in my opinion because they are smear jobs, for the most part. When I bought this book, I already knew of Dwayne Epstein's admiration for Lee Marvin, and so, I knew his book would most likely be balanced. I did not want to read something that would sugarcoat and make excuses for his flaws. I also did not want to read something, which focused solely on his flaws. Dwayne Epstein managed to strike a perfect balance.

As we fans know, Lee Marvin was a brilliant actor and a brave warrior. He was not only touched and scarred by his childhood with emotionally detached and clueless parents, but, also the ravages of war and alcoholism. When looking at his life, he should have had an easy life. He was an intelligent, handsome, and talented man, and yet his life was anything but easy. Dwayne Epstein does a superb job in presenting a multi-dimensional picture of this very gifted and haunted actor. It would have been very easy to only concentrate on his flaws, leaving out the good aspects of Lee's personality. Epstein confirmed what I have always suspected; that there was an acutely sensitive soul under all of that Lee Marvin bravado. I was especially pleased to read the afterword from Christopher Marvin, Lee's one and only son. I have always wanted to know his children's thoughts about their father and Christopher did not disappoint. He did not dwell in the negative, which would have been easy to do. Instead, he painted a portrait of a loving father, who bonded with his son. Thankfully, very little was said about Lee's hateful and disgusting second wife and when Epstein talked about family, the focus was where it should have been: on his first wife Betty and their children. In addition to Mr. Epstein's wonderful book, I would recommend the book written by Betty Marvin and the book written by Donald Zec (Lee authorized the Zec book and Zec interviewed him, spending countless hours with Lee). All three of these books together are all you will ever need when reading about this screen icon. Dwayne Epstein's admiration for Lee comes through, and he perfectly demonstrates to lesser biographers how to write about an imperfect subject without completely trashing them.

Required reading for those interested in the birth of Israel

A fascinating account of the role of the underground army of Eretz Israel, known as the Irgun Zvai Leumi, by its commander-in-chief, and late Israeli statesman and Prime Minister, Menachem Begin.

A story known by relatively few, a first hand account of one side of the resistance movement that resulted in the birth of modern Israel. The Irgun was considered by many Jews and non-Jews alike to be a terrorist organization. After reading this book, one will find out why Israel would probably not have been created without the controversial efforts of the Irgun. One will similarly discover the difference between a freedom fighter and a terrorist (even though Begin actually refers to himself as a "terrorist" in the book; possibly a result of no proper equivalent translation from the original Hebrew. Hint: a freedom fighter does not attack civilian targets.

After a brief introduction of Begin's earlier life as a prisoner of the Bolsheviks before the Nazi invasion of Poland, Begin recounts the history of the Irgun as its leader from 1943, until the creation of the State of Israel in 1948. The "resistance movement" consisted of David Ben-Gurion's Jewish Agency for Palestine, the semi-legal Jewish army known as the Haganah, and the underground movement of the Irgun (and a smaller break away underground army known as the Stern Group. Although the former and latter were at times allies, and at other times bitter enemies, the message of the book is how each group needed the other components to accomplish the goal of a free Israel.

With the fervor of a brilliant statesman, and the eloquence of a lawyer (which he was), Begin writes a gripping account of the history of the Irgun and its methods. The Irgun worked primarily by audacious "confiscation" of British arms and attack of military and British police installations with its primary weapon, dynamite.

Included are separate chapters of the most famous exploits of the Irgun, including the Altalena affair, Operation Chick, the blowing up of the south wing of the King David Hotel (which served as the seat of the civil and military British occupation authority), the battle for Jaffa, the counter-floggings and counter-hangings of British officers in retaliation for the same of Irgun Freedom fighters,

An especially fascinating chapter entitled "Meetings in the Dark" recounts Commander Begin's meetings with various dignitaries (such as Dr. Ralph Bunche) which were litterly held in a darkened room, so Begin could not be identified (he had a high price on his head by the British).

One cannot help, after reading this book, to appreciate the role of Begin (and his organization, the Irgun) played in ejecting the British from Eretz Israel, to form the modern State of Israel, and the stupidity of the infighting between the various components of the resistance movement (whose methods complemented each other).

Although the primary subject of the book is the history of the Irgun, the reader will no doubt become interested in the biography of the author, who later served in the Knesset, in the cabinet (as minister without portfolio), until he finally rose to power as Prime Minister of Israel in the late 1970's, and death in relatively obscurity shortly after his wife's death in the late 1980's.

My copy of "The Revolt" is the 9th English Edition, published in Israel by Steimatsky. It is personally autographed by Begin's late wife Aliza, January 1979.

Masterful story that receives little recognition today

The revolt is the Menachin Begins personal account, as the leader of one of the Jewish underground factions, of the founding of the state of Israel. Those who discount the idea of Zionism (Jewish nationalism) as nothing more than western colonialism need to read this book. Perhaps Begin in later years said it best: When asked to give up Jerusalem (the capital of Israel) in the same manner that the French gave up Algeria, Beign replied that the French would not give up Paris and the British would not give up London.

Inside the Irgun

This book takes you into and underground with the Irgun Zvi Leumi. The jewish freedom fighter organization led by Begin during the years leading up to the establishment of the state of Israel. It was very interesting getting Begin's view on the contraversal organization on subjects such as Ben-Gurion and Dier Yassin. Begin takes you into this underground world that reads with the excitment of a ficticious novel. Every reader will come away inspired by the charasmatic leader. However, to get a true prospective on Begin himself, this is not the book. Begin is very modest about his leadership and focus's more on the organization rather than himself. Although, some is lost in the translation from Hebrew to English, you won't come away dissapointed

A real confidence booster!

My oldest daughter is 10 and has a knack for math and an interest in game development. When I heard about the release of JavaScript for Kids, I knew it would be right up her alley. I was right. After completing the seventeen chapters, she's still cracking open the book and tweaking her code. I like how the book has challenges at the end of the chapters to encourage the kids to take their coding skills to the next level. If you're not an IT major, you can download the code solutions from their website.

This 309 page book is broken down into three parts: Fundamentals, Advanced JavaScript, and Canvas. In parts one and two your kids will learn about syntax, comments, variables, strings, booleans, arrays, objects, HTML, loops, conditionals, prompts, functions, ODM elements, jQuery, animations, and time outs. The last section focuses on the canvas element and drawing objects like squares, arcs, circles, and later controlling them with keyboard input.

There's definitely a lot to learn in this book and I like how they made it fun to put these concepts into practice. Throughout my daughter's learning adventure she has created a text based Hang Man game, a random insult generator (what kid can resist that?), a treasure hunt game with a map, and the final program was a Snake game.

The Notepad++ editor that this book recommends is free and will catch some, but not all syntax errors. Debugging broken programs takes just as much (if not more) time to fix than they do to write. Sometimes the show stopping errors are typos, other times it's a misplaced space or semicolon. Fortunately, my computer science major husband was able to catch some of the errors in my daughter's programs when I couldn't find everything.

Despite the frustrations of debugging, this has been a positive learning experience for our daughter. She has been so excited about this that she showed her teacher at school what she has done, and was so impressed that her teacher made a whole lesson about it. As a parent, I have seen the confidence and motivation this has given her and I am both proud and excited for her. This is an excellent introduction not just to JavaScript, but to programming in general. It covers all the essentials -- from data types to object-oriented programming and invites the reader to do some simple development (e.g., a hangman game and simple animation). Most chapters end with a nice wrap-up of what was covered and some challenges for the reader to see if he can put what's he's learned to use.

The book is written in a style that is very inviting and formatted with a larger than normal font and cute little illustrations that make it less intimidating to anyone who has no programming experience.

Highly recommended for anyone who wants to break into programming -- from middle school to the elderly. This book makes learning the basics and understanding how computers work *fun*.

Great for kids!

My son recently mentioned something about becoming a computer programmer someday. I pointed out that kids could actually start programming anytime, because there’s no age requirement. I thought JavaScript for Kids would be a good place for him to start. This book is part of a best-selling series of “for Kids” programming books, and this one is written by an engineer who uses Javascript for his job at Twitter. It has fun examples, real games that children can program themselves, and it also requires no special software to run. It’s filled with cute illustrations and is written clearly and is easy to read.

Throughout my high school and undergraduate experiences, I have had to conduct multiple scientific experiments and write many research papers. Of all the resources I have used in those endeavors, I think that this eBook is one of the most understandable and helpful guides I have seen for how to successfully conduct and record research. The eBook has many real-life, relatable examples that make the hard concepts easier to grasp. Also, it asks a lot of hypothetical questions that make you question the scientific world around you, which I appreciate because I have had to think out of the box about many topics I would have otherwise not considered. I highly recommend this eBook to anyone who loves research!

This book provides all the information an undergraduate student needs to know when dealing with research (whether conducting it or using results). It helps students to think about the information presented in research critically and with an educated eye. Dr. Cauraugh also includes many different examples of real world scenarios in which demonstrate why a clear understanding of research methods is critical. I used this book for Dr. Cauraugh's class but I believe that the lessons I've learned through this book and his class will stay with me for the rest of my professional career.

This textbook closely follows the lecture portion of Dr. Cauraugh's class. This ebook focuses on concepts of how to present conduct and present your research in a very elementary format. For students who have not participated in undergraduate research, or need to learn how to formally conduct research, this book is a very good resource. Dr. Cauraugh pulls from many different sources and breaks down the process into very simple, and understanding terms. It is a very informal and engaging read, in the sense that when you are reading it, it is as if he is conversing with you directly. He asks many critical thinking questions that require you to pause and reflect on not just your research, but how you present all work you have done while in college. A lot of different aspects of research are presented, and he ties them all together with similar real world examples. This book is up to date and relatable to what is happening in the research fields right now. This book is particularly helpful if you are not familiar with how to properly present statistical data as it has its own crash course in a few short chapters. I have learned a great deal from this book, and will keep it as a reference for my post graduate career. The presentation of the desired experimental design along with the ethical aspects is easily communicated and will be helpful to any amateur researcher.

This is only an OK review book in my opinion. The format is questions and answers with rationale, you will still need to study!! I have found several questions with an answer that does not reflect the written rationale for that answer. Some of the questions are quite bizarre in their content and scenarios. I recommend using the BCEN site for practice questions and answers, and CEN exam review by Med Ed with Jeff Solheim. The BCEN site uses Sheehy's and Emergency Nursing Core Curriculum 6th edition for its references.

Amazing review book. All you'll need to pass the exam!

I was hesitant to purchase this review book in fear it wouldn't cover the material on the actual CEN exam. However, this book was an amazing study guide. In fact a question in the review book was on the exam, almost word for word. I'd recommend this book to anyone studying for the CEN exam. It provids tons of difficult questions that truly preps you for test day. The authors did a great job and allowed me to pass my CEN!
