beautiful and captivating

This slim and beautiful book is captivating. Picking up where Whitman left off, Seigel explores a world in decline. All that was once fresh and new and full of promise is now in a state of decay and the souls who witness the decay are left unheard as they vanish into the tarpit. But here, in this book, are their voices, which expand and contract like lungs breathing air as the narrative blows out wide to expose the landscare and pulls itself in tight explore the deepest thoughts. And regrets:

"Withdraw, push away, cross our hands on our chests, say our prayers. We'll quit smoking and keep each other from killing. We'll quit drinking, Jesus, quit books and start our sunburned lives over. Under our pillows we'll keep the ache in our teeth and the longing for each other's skin, our ten thousand noticings of shore and forest, none of which can contain us like we might contain one another. After dark we'll swim naked in black water. Then, wrapped in blankets, we'll sit on the porch and watch the snow descend into our hair."

Though the landscape may seem bleak, it is not without hope; while the narrative begins with "dead lakes," it ends with the ritual of bathing, signifying the potential for baptism and rebirth

Exceptional and extraordinary, the reading creates snapshots in the mind of many things about the Midwest, the raw climate and life in economic upheaval. I kept picking it up and going back to pages to bring it all in,and immediately looked around me with a different view of the place I called home.

This is a great book on Biblical manhood

This is a great book on Biblical manhood. Of course raising a boy into a Biblical man has always taken a lot of thought and wisdom, but it seems like maybe even more so now than in other times because of the way that society is revolting against the very idea that God indeed did create a man and a woman with ways of glorifying God that are unique to each gender. I highly recommend this to all Christians who are raising boys.

Practical and interesting

Although I do not have kids yet, the lessons and chapters and concepts taught in this book have been useful for me in dealing with my own sunday school kids (of course the boys in particular). Lot of verses from Proverbs,very insightful.

What Kind of Man Should My Boy Become?

I have read a lot of books on parenting, and particularly on parenting boys, and this is far and away the best I've yet encountered. Wilson's counsel is both pastoral and practical, and always tinged with his typical witty prose.

His approach is very different from many other parenting books, mainly because he starts from a different perspective. Rather than beginning with the various challenges associated with bringing up boys, he challenges parents (and especially fathers) to give consideration to the type of men we want our boys to become. In every circumstance, he encourages us to think about how best to prepare our boys for mature manhood. This often results in a very different approach from what society typically advocates, in everything from discipline to roughhousing to education.

If you have (or may ever have) a son or grandson, this is a very worthwhile book to have available as a reference (I expect to revisit it frequently as my son grows older and enters new stages of life). It would also be a great read for school teachers, as there is much that pertains to nurturing masculinity in the classroom.

HORRIBLE!

If I could give this book less that 1 star I would. It is horrible! There are mistakes everywhere- grammar, spelling, and most importantly mathematical mistakes. If I am paying this much for a text book, it better be correct, and this book is far from it.

I am pleased to find a used Clinical Calculations, 7th ed. text that is in EXCELLENT condition (no markings anywhere!) at a significantly reduced price! Best of all, I recieved the book in record time! I love the set-up of this book! It is easy to read and has excellent examples, practice problems, and clarified answers! This is one text that I will keep as a great reference!

Great Book - Found Replacement Stickers!

I don't remember this book as a kid, but my mom swears I had it. Now I'm 33 and I have a daughter of my own and this was given to us Christmas of 2008. It was during Christmas 2009 when she really found this book and fell in love with it, as did I reading it to her. We just love it. As other reviewers have said, this book just evokes great memories of the Christmas season. And who can not love the scratch and sniff smells.

Now here is lies the rub about this book. Only the very potent aromatic smells last at all. Pine and peppermint were still going a year later, but the rest (apple pie, gingerbread, hot chocolate, and orange) were pretty much dead. And after just one season even the pine and peppermint started to go. So what is one to do when your one of your daughter's favorite books loses its prominent scratch and sniff feature. Well you go on a sticker hunt and as of Sept 2010, I've now found them all.

Since it was so hard to find these stickers I wanted to post a review of the book and a location that other parents like me could find replacement stickers. I started my search in June 2010 and found almost all of them at the website EverythingSmells.com. The only scent that seemed non-existent was gingerbread (unless you wanted to buy 2500 stickers from a custom company or cut your own out of Target greeting cards). So I emailed the company and asked if they knew of anywhere to get gingerbread. They didn't know, but kept my email and just wrote me today to tell me that they now have a gingerbread sticker for sale! So now you can get all the stickers in one place! Mind you, they will not look like the original stickers, but at least the children don't care. It's the act of scratching and sniffing that matters to them.

So to the parents out there that bemoan the fact that the book has lost its smell--go get some stickers (with plenty of spares), paste them in, and re-enjoy the book with your children or grandchildren for all it's Christmas charm. I know we did and still do today.

A Favorite Book!

I was so excited when I saw this book offered on Amazon-- I purchased two of these-- One went to my grandkids who had never had a copy. They absolutely loved smelling all the wonderful Christmas smells! They bring it out to read all year round! The other one I sent to my daughter who had one when she was growing up. It was one of her favorite books! She said she couldn't decide whether to go through it and smell all the smells or to save it for when she had kids...

About the Author
George M. Siouris, D.Eng.Sc., is Adjunct Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Air Force Institute of Technology, and a researcher with the Directorate of Development Planning, Studies and Analysis Division, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. Dr. Siouris has written numerous technical papers, book reviews, and conference papers; contributed a chapter on inertial navigation to the Encyclopedia of Physical Science Technology; and is the author of Aerospace Avionics Systems: A Modern Synthesis. From 1983 to 1993 he was the Editor for Navigation/Tracking Systems in the IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems. His primary research interests include theory and applications of inertial navigation and guidance systems, modeling of physical systems, and applications of modern control and estimation theory.

An Excellent Book for Control Engineers

As an industrial control engineer and a reader of "An Engineering Approach to Optimal Control and Estimation Theory", I would like to recommend it to my colleagues. This book aims at making some complicated topics accessible to general readers (such as engineers and practitioners) rather than scaring them away by lengthy derivation of mathematics without practical context.
This elementary treatise seems to have covered most important aspects of theoretical fundamentals, such as stochastic processes, parameter estimation, filtering techniques, regulation control, tracking control, and optimal control. And yet what is good and perhaps unique about this book is its practical examples and many exercises, which I found very helpful in my reading and learning the subject. This really is a book written by an engineer for engineers.
Certainly nothing is perfect, not even many texts written by "applied" mathematicians. In this concern, I would like to bring readers' attention to the book author's self-corrections of typographical errors which was published as errata in the IEEE AES Systems Magazine, in the January issue of 1997. I think the author found most typos and published them for correction soon after the book was placed in the market. Along with his list of corrections is a nice book review article written by an engineering professor of Argentina (in a much more professional manner than what I surprisingly see in the above). These should help the readers contrast the above unprofessional comments with a fair judgement about this book.

Unprofessional comments on a very professional book

I am using "An Engineering Approach to Optimal Control and Estimation Theory" by G. Siouris for sometime as the main guidance material for solving some practical problems. The book is excellent. It provides straight forward answers to all development and implementation-related questions that have been raised by engineers and applied scientists working in the relevant areas. After reading the comment put by C. Bernard on www.amazon.com I had to take a second look at this book. The book indeed is excellent! It does contain some typos but these typos can mislead only a layman, and fortunately, it is virtually impossible to find a layman among those who implement Optimal Control and Estimation Theory in real life projects. An engineering student would enjoy the way the material is presented, and would not be obstructed by typos. Moreover, I found C. Bernard's comment quite inappropriate. It is not aimed at the improvement of the book but seems to reflect some personal motives. I hope that with the help of readers like myself G. Siouris will fix the typos in the second edition and C. Bernard will learn some good Internet manners.

A didactic jewel for a student and gold mine for an engineer

Recently I had a chance to read Dr. Siouris' excellent book "An Engineering Approach to Optimal Control and Estimation Theory." As a practicing engineering manager, I found this authoritative modern book written clearly and with good didactic style, which should appeal to engineers and students dealing with the applications of optimal control theory. In spite of some typographical errors, typical of a first edition,and which the careful reader can easily spot, I rate this book very highly. Moreover, such blemishes can be detected very easily and corrected by an instructor, and do not detract from my conclusion that the book can be highly recommended. As a matter of fact, the author himself discovered these typos and subsequently published them in the IEEE AES Magazine's January 1997 issue. I myself, which any reviewer with professionalism and decency, brought some of these errors to the author's attention. Finally, this book is a must reading for every practicing engineer in the areas of computer engineering, guidance and control, business management, economics, etc.

The book was a great supplement to what we learned in class

This book was used as a required text for my Sustainable Organizational Management course at Wake Forest University. One of the professors was the author Daniel S. Fogel. The book was a great supplement to what we learned in class. The professors did not explicitly use it during lectures as most professors would. The book itself sets the reader up for clear understanding and success in learning concepts/ideas. Each chapter starts with a chapter summary and includes a visual map indicating the chapter's focus in the overall framework. The summary is followed by a real-world example highlighting a firm and its struggle or success in thinking sustainably. The remaining parts of the chapter focus on specific strategies or frameworks to aid in strategy development. The chapter is closed out with revisiting a real-world example and concludes with a different chapter summary followed by critical thinking questions. The chapters are clear, concise and were developed mindfully so that learning is easy. If you want to learn about using sustainability as a lens to deepen organizational strategy, or focus on sustainability as a lens for business practice, this book is a great start.

This book is highly detailed and goes into much more than just the Regula 25 movement that the other cuckoo clock repair books concentrate on. It explains how the mechanism operates that ejects and retrieves the cuckoo bird. It describes how a cuckoo clock music box operates and how to adjust one so that it will operate properly. It describe how a cuckoo clock rack and snail count wheel system operates. It describes repairs such as how to repair the bellows. It expalains which weights go with what movements. It describes the operation of the Hubert Herr and Schatz cuckoo clock movements.It describes how to make an adjustable cukoo clock test stand that is indispensible for anyone working on cuckoo clocks. Great Book - I Fixed My Cuckoo!!

My boy friend bought this book for me because he knows I had a problem with my cuckoo clock. This is the only cuckoo clock book that I have found that will tell you how to adjust the cuckoo clock music box in easily understood step-by-step instructions. I followed the intructions nad now my cuckoo clock with a music box plays as it was designed to. Thanks Tony and Willy (boy friend and author). Joyce

A bit confusing

This book covers more movements than Seaman's book, but the text is not clear and the pictures also are not as helpful as I would have liked. Overall, it is a good effort and it does have useful information, it just takes a bit of deciphering on some parts.
