About the Author
Joline Blais teaches digital narrative and indigenous media at the University of Maine, where she co-directs the Still Water program with fellow New Media professor Jon Ippolito.

Jon Ippolito is a former Associate Curator of Media Arts at the Guggenheim Museum, where he curated the first museum exhibition of virtual reality and founded the Variable Media Network for preserving digital culture.

Interesting, comprehensive look at "new media" and its place in the art world

I ordered this book because it was assigned to me for an experimental university class, History of Alternative Media. It was definitely helpful to the latter half of the class, which covered artists working in new technological mediums as diverse computer programming and human biochemical material. I don't think I've seen another book that covers what place "new-media" art might have in as much detail. If you're interested in contemporary digital art, the Internet and its relationship to the established white gallery spaces of the "Art World" this book will be helpful to you.

In terms of the book design, the pages are printed in interesting colors and in contemporary fonts to reflect the "modern/edgy" aesthetic of the book topic. Keeping in mind that this book is from 2006, it already looks a little bit dated. In addition, the publishing date means that the content doesn't address newer popular media like 3D printing, but the artistic shift it's addressing is more present than ever.

This serious, academic book was helpful to me as an art student because it presents these unconventional creations and weighs the implications of what its place is (if it has any) in the world of art without making any solid value judgement about it.

Worthy of its name, At The Edge of Art does its share of risk-taking. It is a serious offering that fills a void in the theory and contemporary history of digital, networked practices and approaches. Simply put, this book is intellectual. It is ethical in its approach, communicating an obvious care and concern about there being a space for vital cultural works and workers who "hack" at the accelerating technological spectacle. (I have ordered the book as the required text for my digital theory and practice classes.)

About the Author
G. E. R. Lloyd is Emeritus Professor of Ancient Philosophy and Science at the University of Cambridge, Former Master of Darwin College, Cambridge, and Senior Scholar in Residence at the Needham Research Institute, Cambridge. He is the author of twenty-two books and editor of four, and was knighted for 'services to the history of thought' in 1997.

Romance that transports the reader with its romantic tenderness

Jesse Manning got dumped. It's not just getting dumped but how she got dumped by her no-good boyfriend the second the pregnancy test reads positive. Cad, oaf and all around self-centered jerk are only a few words to describe the biological father of Jesse's baby. When Jesse collapses at the bar Green Garter, in steps Navy Chief Brock Sullivan, Navy SEAL. A man full of duty and honor, not only does he take her to the hospital but he offers her his house. That's not all he offer her! With deployment just a heartbeat away, this serious Navy man offers her marriage! Broke and needing to care for her baby, Jesse takes Brock up on his offer. Can this Navy SEAL give her something she has never had before? Can this dutiful and honorable man find that sometimes life is about more than duty and prowess?

Teresa Carpenter draws the reader into the heart of her romance from the very beginning as Jesse's boyfriend Tad brazenly and selfishly abandons her in the most insulting way possible to a mother-to-be. Immediately, the reader feels her dilemma alongside the pain and outrage. From his introduction, the reader feels Brock's desire for Jesse before he learns about her pregnancy. After the initial dramatic opening of this romance, Teresa Carpenter pulls the reader into the story through her characterization. Jesse and Brock are lovable characters, good people with good hearts who are kind to one another. Jesse has a heart of gold and just enough spunk to balance her dependence on Brock in this marriage of convenience. Brock is a man serious in his commitments, a man of honor, but also a man who thinks of women not just as duty but also with a romantic twist when it comes to their wedding. Brock is quite simply one great guy all the way around from his body to his heart and soul. With each scene, the reader sees more and more to love about both Brock and Jesse.

Despite the initial drama of the marriage of convenience, Teresa Carpenter's romance develops gradually as the hero and heroine come together through emails during his deployment. Through electronic letters, Teresa and Brock share their lives, their hearts, their laughter in manner that draws them together. Their relationship develops naturally, as their two hearts grow together gently. Jesse and Brock share a nice spunk, a spark of life and even fun humor between them as they respond to each other and life's events. Teresa Carpenter writes a beautiful scene in which Brock makes a connection between Jesse's baby and his life as a Navy man that creates a tribute to those who serve in the military. Several scenes between him and the baby endear Brock to the reader, as he moves into his role as father with love and a natural ease. Brock's return home exposes them both to a deeper level of sharing and vulnerability, but Teresa Carpenter has carefully laid the groundwork to believe in the hero and heroine's romance. The narrative itself in HER BABY, HIS PROPOSAL is very smooth and gentle. The ever so romantic tone of this book just transports a reader into their world.

About the Author

Andrew Zimbalist earned a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. He has been in the economics department at Smith College since 1974 and has been a visiting professor at Doshisha University, the University of Geneva, and Hamburg University. Zimbalist has consulted in Latin America for the United Nations Development Program, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and numerous companies. He has consulted in the sports industry for players' associations, cities, companies, teams, and leagues, and has published twenty-five books.

Fantastic book about the troubling economics of the Olympic Games

This is an extremely well written book that relentlessly and completely gives the lie to the oft-spoken idea that large sporting events like the Olympics and World Cup are economic gold mines for host cities or countries. Simply put, they aren't. But it's worse than that. Andrew Zimbalist uses facts, pertinent economic explanations, humor and irony to explain how host cities are nearly all left with economic disasters after the Olympics and World Cup leave town, taking most of the financial gain with them. The book showcases the sometimes insane euphoria, and big cash, that goes into bidding for world class sporting events with promises of increased tourism during the games that extends after the games, increased cache and economic preimenance that go along with hosting such events.

Zimbalist does a fantastic job of explaining that the Olympic Games don't even bring more tourists to a city while they are happening, let alone for years afterward. London actually had fewer tourists in the Summer of 2012. As for the supposed cache attached to host cities, this book explains it can all go bad if there is a terrorist attack, protests, or, as in Brazil, deaths associated with the construction of venues.

And the book showcases how the 'legacy' of hosting these events can often turn into a public relations nightmare when, like Athens and Beijing there are rotting stadiums that scar the landscape, or, like Sochi, you leave an impression of an infrastructure mess.

And for those cities who eagerly jump at the chance for a bid, they often cite the 1984 Olympic Games in LA (which turned a modest profit) and the 1992 Barcelona Games, (which excellerated that city's rise as a city of consequence), Zimbalist clearly why those two cities are singular events, not easily reproduced.

I love the Olympics. This book tells another side of the story beyond the athletic drama of the games. After reading this book, I hope my city never even bids for an Olympics.

Live in Boston? you need to read this book

Liked the book, living in Boston it helped open my eyes to how bad hosting the Olympics can be, even on a good day. It had some significant sections that seemed to repeat. At some level it seemed like a solid long-form article for The Atlantic that got stretched into a book.

But I still tell everyone I know to read it. Boston 2024 will be a giant sink hole for money, not unlike the Big Dig.

Thanks but no thanks

This is a very interesting book. It concerns the gamble that's taken by governments with the World Cup and the Olympic Games. It took Montreal thirty years before it paid off its debt from the Olympics. They aren't an investment but should rather be seen more as an expenditure for public approval. After all everybody loves a party until the bill arrives.

Karen Kingsbury is a very talented author. Her stories are exceptional....beautiful and spiritually written. I find my self laughing, crying, feeling God's love in all her books. I've just begun reading her stories and I must say I can't get enough. Highly recommend her books.

If I only knew then, what I know now. This past school year, I was asked to teach my fifth graders a science unit on Motion and Design. Having very little physical science content knowledge, I was uncomfortable answering any questions throughout the unit. I just wish I would have known about this book before. This book is written in an easy-to-understand and often humorous manner. Each chapter contains a simple experiment with household items followed by a straightforward explanation of the science concepts behind the experiment. I enjoyed the author's humorous way of presenting something so serious. It is inquiry build (except the given answers). I finally understand (a little bit)

I've never even come close to understanding even one of Newton's laws. I only made it through Physics in college because my brother-in-law is a science whiz, and I took the course over the internet. I am so happy to have come across this book though. For the first time in my life, I think I get it! Robertson's explanations address all of my (to what some people may believe) silly questions respectfully - as if I am the one who is logical for questioning and not grasping it! He explains the rationale behind the concepts in a humorous (sometimes laugh out loud) way - and I walked away wishing I could take a stab at that college physics class once more.

Great for Advanced or Novice in Real Estate - Has it All.

This book is very comprehensive, yet easy to read. This book has it all, buying, selling, financing, forecast trending, foreclosures and a detailed method making money in the current market cycle.The book covers market trends, historicals and gives you 7 years worth of future projections in just about every area imagineable.

I own two properties (my home and an tri-plex), one of which I have been trying to sell, without any success. My biggest challenge presently is to sell my home and figure out if I should buy a new one or rent. After reading this material I have a lot more confidence that renting would be a bad idea. Meanwhile the author gave me a bunch of creative ways to expedite the sale my property. One of my concerns was that once I sell it, lenders will likely make it difficult for me to get financing for my next home. Again Ross detailed how to use other sources for financing, specifically in Chapter 6. This is a great book for answering the what type, where, and how much you spend on any property, even when the market is in a difficult period. The book has so much information that it is next to impossible to just read it once, or explain it in this review. It is a good book for the experienced investor who wants to make a lot of money in this real estate market, but also from my first read it was written simple enough to benefit any first time home buyer. It has a lot of complex calculators and algorithms for measuring the quality of a property, but then the author gives you free access to web sites so that you do not have to do anything manually. I would recommend this to just about all levels, novice or advanced, real estate buyers or sellers.

Ross Is Boss

Ed is best read.

Simply put, Ed Ross is real about real estate.

Look at his record: has owned over 200 properties and has custom-built, renovated and personally rented more than 100 dwellings and office buildings. And that's just data on the jacket.

The information on the 230 pages builds his case -- that you can make serious money. Even in this flopping housing market.

As Ed writes, it's all about doing your homework. With his textbook.

Ross spells it out clearly: 65% of our country will stall on the housing front until 2013. That's in keeping with his cyclical call of 2006 -- that we're in for seven years of drought.

Still, that leaves 35% in for rain. So natch he points to the Pacific Northwest for a floating housing market. In his Top 10 U.S. Cities section, Bellingham, Wash., comes out No. 1 and Bend, Ore., No. 2.

Why Bellingham? Says Ross: It's between two heavyweights in Seattle and Vancouver, directly in line of residential migration growth. Add the sharing of those two cultural meccas, thriving biz and Northwest lifestyle, and the sum question follows: What's not to like?
