The President more than doubled the amount of time alloted the students, and, back out in the hotel corridor as he was leaving, he was heard to remark that it was one of the stiffest press conferences he'd ever had, that, in fact, "some of the White House boys could take a few pointers from the kids."
At the student press conference with General Dwight D. Eisenhower the following year, it was in answer to a student's question that Ike publicly revealed for the first time the greatest decision he had to make during the war.
The history that unfolds in these pages is laced with humor. Top Notch, Must-Read for All J-School Students

I had the rare opportunity to watch Val Lauder's "The Back Page..." move from manuscript to published book, and I can say without equivocation, "The Back Page" needs to be placed on the must-read, must-assign list in every School of Journalism in this country. Lauder brings to life the history of news reporting as it was in its most dynamic days--when newspapers had the power to shape pubic opinion, move lawmakers, and influence national and world leaders. Lauder takes us behind the scenes of one of the nation's newsprint icons, the Chicago Daily News, showing us the humor, the pride, the pitfalls, and, most of all, the gritty determination of a young copygirl to succeed as a reporter in a male-dominated profession. "The Back Page" reveals to today's J-school students the foundation of their studies--and explains many of the processes that still underpin great journalism; Lauder pulls back the electron-fabric veil of newspaper history to show how reporters of the WWII and post-war years developed their stories, worked to snag once-in-a-lifetime interviews, and built reputations that would give them access to the key players on the political, social, and entertainment scenes of the day.

The Back Page Reveals Much about Newspapers, Events and Personalities

This is a compelling and important book for multiple reasons. Lauder describes in striking detail how a major city newspaper was organized and functioned in the 1940s and what it was like to work there as its first "copygirl." You can almost hear the shouts of "boy" or "girl," the loud bells of Teletype machines heralding news bulletins, and the incomparable noise of a Linotype machine. You can sense the smoke-filled atmosphere of a male-dominated work environment, including men who, in their own begrudging way, reached out to a young woman strongly desiring to become part of that world. Such details are unknown to people working in today's smoke-free newsrooms where the silence is broken only by the click of computer keyboards from behind cubicle walls.
Lauder depicts how journalists at the Chicago Daily News responded to important news events of World War II. After a rescue of prisoners of war from a Japanese prison camp in the Philippines, she had to manually alphabetize names of the released prisoners so the newspaper could print a list that was easily accessible to readers. After the clanging bells announced the death of President Franklin Roosevelt, Lauder rushed to the newspaper's library, where librarians had already assembled files about FDR and the new president, Harry Truman. She recalls how she and other staff members stood on a balcony and heard the joyous sounds of a city rejoicing at the news of victory over Japan.
After the war, Lauder began writing a column for the city's teenagers, and she started the practice of having visiting politicians and entertainers appear at news conferences of student journalists. In those accounts, we learn how President Truman went beyond his prealloted time to talk to high school students who greatly impressed him and how Dwight Eisenhower told them about a momentous decision he had to make before the D-Day invasion. Lauder also persuaded entertainers to appear before the students, and she reveals their human and personal side in dealing with her and the students. She describes how she convinced Frank Sinatra to write a Father's Day greeting for her column.
Lauder worked in a newspaper environment that no longer exists, and she dealt with big-name stars and politicians in ways that are no longer possible. Her accounts of those interactions make this book important to many readers.

Fascinating pictures, fascinating stories

Look closely at the cover: pictures of the same young woman with Sinatra, Truman, Eisenhower. That woman is the author, Val Lauder, as the Chicago Daily News Keen Teen editor, filling a role she proposed when she herself was just a teen. Stories of press conferences she arranged for Chicago's high school editors form the backbone of this fascinating look at Chicago and America at the end of World War II.
One student's question to President Harry S. Truman led to national headlines the next day. Another, to Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, made Ike pause and reflect at length on what he saw as his most difficult decision during World War II. (It wasn't the answer I expected.)
Lauder's job also gave her entrée to the stars of the era, including Frank Sinatra, Martin and Lewis, Marlene Dietrich and many more, often getting to know the real person behind the image. It was an exciting era, and Lauder experienced it from inside the newsroom of one of the nation's best newspapers, where she started as a copygirl and got to know many of the nation's top reporters. On occasion, she rambles a bit, but her tales and reflections paint vivid pictures that will appeal to anyone interested in the war years, newspapers, glamour, postwar politics and midcentury life in Chicago.
