Light and smart. It will help me to continue being who I already am and being myself infront of others. As it unveals the methods others may use to keep you "in your place" as they please.

Falls Short

This book had great potential, but I was disappointed. I don't think it did enough to reinforce the idea that lice can happen to anyone. The child diagnosed with lice in the book expresses feeling ashamed and says he won't have anymore friends, and while I think those are legitimate feelings for a child experiencing head lice to express, the book could have done a better job to assure kids that getting lice is not a social failure. Also, it should be noted that on one page, a louse is depicted smoking a cigar. I was excited to read this book, hoping that it might be something I could share with my students to help destigmatize the lice issue. But I am afraid they will miss the message. The consensus regarding this book seems to be about the same among my colleagues, including a school nurse too. I am a David Shannon fan, but I will not be putting this book out on the shelf.

I have been itching to write a review of this book. First the illustrations are humorous and colorful. When plagued by lice besides getting treatment this book will be a good tool to deal with a situation that is total void of humor. I need to get to know other works by David Shannon, this work has great promise.

disorganized mess

While the author has a huge amount of knowledge on the subject matter he clearly has no idea how to create a textbook that flow seemlessly from one topic to the next. I spent all semester jumping back and forth between subjects and topics. The case studies are dull and dry, and for the most part outdated.

It's a good start

I bought the Kindle version of this book for a class that I am taking as part of my masters degree. It has a lot of features that I like such as being able to search and add easy to find notes. The thing that I don't like about it is that the Kindle version does not have everything that the hard copy does. The Kindle version also doesn't have page numbers. When the professor references a certain page in an assignment, it makes it very difficult to know if I am referencing the right material. For the most part I like using a Kindle version but they need to do a better job to make sure that everything is included from the original version.

As far as the actual content of the book is concerned, it is fairly informative. I think the author could do a better job explaining some topics. A lot of the phrasing could be reworded to make the book easier to read.

Good if You Can Suffer Through

Just finished a class taught from this book and I did NOT love trying to learn from it! Ettlie knows TONS but can't seem to organize his thoughts or stay on topic! Clue: he does repeat the same thoughts throughout the book so occasionally you can use later passages to decipher others. He even has two sections by the same name in one chapter - I am not kidding! I don't even think his editor could make it through this one. Lots of great ideas in there but plan many hours reading every single reference to try to figure out his points. That is IF you can find the references, some are quite old and many are flat WRONG, or not completely identified, especially in Chapter 9. Sadly, his reviews as a prof sound about the same. Smart guy but proceed with caution!

Practical and innovative.

Great work. I liked the models and frameworks illustrated with examples and developed like a project where I got to know how to develop my strategy and business architecture which can be applied to build choreographed-service based application.
So far I have found many books containing theoretical stuff without substance, got baffled with thick fat books of TOGAF, SOA, COBIT; but in this book the theory has been precisely applied into practice to achieve strategic enterprise architecture. I liked the innovative framework and processes of developing enterprise architecture. The innovation of information System and governance framework is awesome. Negative things are that its all protected with copyright; and its more like a project than an academic book. Any way, we can apply the concept in work –so highly recommended.

I liked the project-based automated approach with clear and easy to digest concepts in a guided way. Though I was expecting somewhat more details about the underlying theory which I can get from any theory book nonetheless. Ease of transformation of business functionality into capability enabled business service using SOA was real cool!! Thank you very much for making my life easier !!!

In three essays, Lilienfeld (English, Lincoln Univ.) uses the techniques of literary criticism and the sociology of addiction to study three modern writers. Thomas Hardy was raised in a hard-drinking rural culture and wrote explicitly about it in The Mayor of Casterbridge. In James Joyce's semi-autobiographical A Portrait of the Artist As a Young Man, Joyce's alcoholic father, John Joyce, who drank away the family's fortunes, appears as Simon Dedalus. Lilienfeld postulates that the Joyce family's strategies for dealing with John Joyce, which were similar to those of other alcoholics' families, are responsible for the famously elliptical plot of Portrait. However, she does not deal with James Joyce's own alcoholism. The weakest of the essays covers Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse; the only addiction seems to be Woolf's grandmother's possible addiction to morphine and the codependent personality it created in Woolf's mother. All of the essays require close familiarity with both the critical literature of the author and the literature of addiction and codependence. An important book from a number of angles.

What Shays did for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in *Achilles in Vietnam,* Dr. Jane Lilienfeld does for alcoholism in her new book, *Reading Alcoholisms.* Lilienfeld's book reviews some familiar works of English literature dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries through the lens of what we have come to know about alcoholism, both the "disease process" itself and its somewhat predictable effects upon alcoholics, their families, and others close to them. At the time the works Lilienfeld focuses upon were written, there was no body of alcoholism theory; nevertheless, the authors of these works reproduced in painful detail what would later become familiar trajectories of personal and familial decline. One of the points Lilienfeld scores is to show that alcoholism as we understand it existed BEFORE we understood it. However crude and ineffective present treatments for them might be, alcoholism (and, by extension, other addictions) are hardly the iatrogenic diseases some occasionally claim. Lilienfeld allows her readers to think inductively about evidence in the texts. One might sometimes wish for her to validate our thinking by drawing more conclusions for us. But that's a small gripe. This is a fine book.

About the Author
BASHARAT PEER was born in Kashmir in 1977. He studied journalism and politics at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. He has worked as an editor at Foreign Affairs and served as a correspondent at Tehelka, India's leading English language weekly. His work has appeared in The Guardian, New Statesman, The Nation, Financial Times Magazine, N+1, and Columbia Journalism Review, among other publications. Curfewed Night, his first book, won one of India's top literary awards, the Vodafone Crossword Book Award for English Non Fiction. Peer is a Fellow at Open Society Institute and lives in New York.

powerful but sad

I lived in Kashmir during the 90's and while reading Curfewed night, I relived the terible events of those years. Basharat has done a great job of recording and compiling a sample of the immense suffering that Kashmiris endured during the 90s and continue to suffer the wider implications of the impasse. I bought 4 copies after reading it to distribute to my friends and family.
A must read for anyone interested in the Kashmir problem.

Report from a besieged city

The book is a beautifully written account of the conflict in Kashmir, in which over 80,000 people have died since 1989. It is written by someone who spent his formative years during the conflict. Like all great books, this one is about human suffering, and what war does to people, to communities, to dreams, and to children's games. While the narrative follows author's own life, I admired the way it was never disruptive -- or worse, indulgent: you rarely see the author describe his own emotions; he builds a novelistic experience for the reader. This is true especially when narrating people's stories: he's virtually transparent. (I know at such moments, rather than being honest witnesses to people's stories, most writers would succumb to the temptation of describing their own feelings.)

Each story in this book is a story of loss: how young men and teenagers lost their youth and teens to conflict -- some with their bodies, others with their souls, many with both and more --, how bunkers and checkpoints cropped among fields of flowers and gardens of fruits, and how schools and temples were turned into military compounds, and how, even in war, people fighting on opposite sides can turn out to be the unlikeliest of acquaintances. In one story, a mother witnessed her son being handed an explosive mine and forced to go into a building where militants were hiding. All she could do was to fight the soldiers and save her other son from a similar fate.

Reading this book, I kept thinking of the Robert Hass's poem, "Winged and Acid Dark":

Basho' told Rensetsu to avoid sensational materials.
If the horror of the world were the truth of the world,
he said, there would be no one to say it
and no one to say it to.

At the end of it, this book affirms not what the ideological lot would have you believe (that it is about Pakistan or India, War on Terror, Indian democracy, conspiracy theories, etc.), but what Bash'o told Rensetsu: it is speaking to someone who cares.

Please read this book. You would know know things that make us human.

A memoir, not "the story of Kashmir"

as Ahmed Rashid intimates in his blurb. Well written, moving, this book is a hesitant collection of stories about people the author has known, or tracked down. In 1948 the state of Kashmir included not just the Valley, whose rural parts and people the author fondly describes (Shrinagar is poorly analysed), but the Indus Valley on the other side of the Line of Control, Ladakh, and Jammu. The latter parts are not there, except for some Pandit refugees, who could have lived anywhere in India.

I liked the book. It does not contain much that is insightful, but it does give a good feel for what it was to grow up in rural Kashmir, the fear, the pain, the injustice of it all. Regrettably the author is much concerned with his own feelings, and can get repetitive on this score, as when time and again he notes his reluctance to look up people.
