About the Author
Nita Rutkosky began teaching business education courses at Pierce College in Puyallup, Washington, in 1978. Since then she has taught a variety of software applications to students in postsecondary Information Technology certificate and degree programs. In addition to this title, she has co-authored the Marquee Series 2013, 2010, 2007, and 2003, Signature Series 2013, 2010, 2007, and 2003, Using Computers in the Medical Office: Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2010, 2007 and 2003, and Computer and Internet Essentials: Preparing for IC3. She has also authored textbooks on keyboarding, WordPerfect, desktop publishing, and voice recognition for Paradigm Publishing. Denise Seguin has served in the Faculty of Business at Fanshawe College of Applied Arts and Technology in London, Ontario since 1986. She developed curriculum and taught a variety of office technology, software applications, and accounting courses to learners in postsecondary Information Technology diploma programs and Continuing Education courses. Seguin has served as Program Coordinator for Computer Systems Technician, Computer Systems Technology, Office Administration, and Law Clerk programs and was acting Chair of the School of Information Technology in 2001. Along with authoring Microsoft Outlook 2013, she has also authored and co-authored many computer application textbooks for Paradigm Education Solutions. Audrey Roggenkamp has been teaching courses in the Business Information Technology department at Pierce College in Puyallup, including keyboarding, skill building, and Microsoft Office programs. In addition to this textbook, Ms. Roggenkamp has authored and co-authored many computer application textbooks for Paradigm Publishing including Marquee Series 2013, 2010, 2007, and 2003, Signature Series 2013, 2010, 2007, and 2003, Using Computers in the Medical Office: Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2010, 2007 and 2003, and Computer and Internet Essentials: Preparing for IC3. Ian Rutkosky teaches Business Technology courses at Pierce College in Puyallup. In addition to this textbook, he has co-authored many Computer and Internet Essentials: Preparing for IC3, Marquee Series: Microsoft Office 2013, and Using Computers in the Medical Office: Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2010. He is also a co-author and consultant for Paradigm's SNAP training and assessment software.

Implementation has been uneven in different countries, and even those countries that have attempted major reforms have not achieved policies that are considered sound by international standards. A key finding is that improving policies paid off in higher GDR and sectoral growth rates, which are vital to reducing poverty; but in countries where policies deteriorated economic performance worsened. The report also shows that, despite the importance of reforming economic policies, countries need to invest more in human capital and infrastructure, expand their institutional capacity, and develop better governance.

He is an authority in musical instrument technology and the inventor of several musical instrument products. He is author of Everything You Should Know about Musical Instruments (1992), The Violin: How It Works (2002), The Flute: How It Works (2003), The Violin Workbook (2004) and The Musical Instrument Desk Reference (Scarecrow Press, 2012).

How to Move in to Your Neighborhood

This book is broken up into six sections. The first section, "Incarnation," explores what we mean when we talk about Christ's incarnation and what it means for us to be incarnational as a faith community. The second section, "Reputation," is probably the most helpful section of the book. Here Halter explores the ins and outs of how one goes about being incarnational. A major part of being incarnational is earning a reputation in a community that gives you authority to speak into the deeper issues of people's lives. You do this by avoiding shallow religiosity, planting yourself down in a community long term, working well, and practicing hospitality. Doing these things goes a very long way and actually set us up for having the type of conversations he describes in the third section, "Conversation." As we incarnate God's presence in the world our conversations must be filled with truth, but they must also be filled with grace. We must also learn not to point people to our church or to our religion. We must learn to point people to Jesus first. This means that the name of King Jesus must constantly been on our lips, and we must ooze out the gospel in our conversations. Eventually these conversations lead to a confrontation; the next section is aptly name "Confrontation." It only consists of one chapter, but it's a very important one. It's the chapter that most people are probably waiting for ("when are we going to talk about evangelism!"). Halter makes the important point that this final step - evangelism - is supposed to be a spirit led and inspired moment. He concludes this book with a section titled, "Transformation," where he addresses the issue of conversion without discipleship.

Pros
1. The book is filled with great stories that help put "flesh" to the ideas he is writing about.
2. He clearly communicates the notion that incarnational ministry is not easy and that it takes a lot of time and work.
3. He does not "church bash" - at times these sorts of books tend towards a "the church has it all wrong" attitude; that attitude is absent in this book.

Cons
1. Halter briefly addresses this, but many have written about how "incarnational ministry" is actually a category mistake. They argue that "incarnation" is unique to Christ's role, thus we cannot be "incarnational." This might not be the book to address those types of issues, but I think Halter could have spoken a bit more to it.
2. The chapter on confrontation tends to overlook some important parts of scripture - Halter says that "Jesus never tried to confront someone. They always tended to confront themselves." Halter holds this up as a model for Christians when they interact with friends and family who are making poor choices. I am pretty sure that Jesus did confront people, however he knew how to confront them well. We cannot simply let people "confront themselves" because there are certainly times, especially within the church, that we need to confront one another.

Conclusion
Hugh Halter has written an excellent book describing what it looks like to live incarnationally. There is much wisdom here, especially for those who want to jump quickly into "sealing the deal." We need to learn to slow down, do life with people, and earn a position to speak the gospel into people's lives. That slowing down and doing life is the "incarnational part." I think Hugh is right, we need to learn to be more like Jesus who spent 30 years "moving into the neighborhood" before he began preaching about the Kingdom.

May we learn to "move into the neighborhood," learn the community's rhythms, learn what is "good news" for our friends and neighbors, before we begin preaching a gospel that makes no sense to them...

Compelling but not comprehensive

I like Hugh. I like the book. I enjoyed the a stories and the analogies. I respect the fruit of the labors. My reservation is on how to complete the circle that I agree with Hugh on. I find great encouragement, great advice, and great practice in these pages...yet without consistency in understanding the bible as a whole I am concerned it won't last. As one small example, if the cross is not most important, but the life of Christ, then we have no hope for he finality of what the cross accomplishes which later the author agrees with when he says that we don't invite Jesus, he is the inviter who gives us the grace. Both are needed but life could not have been without the death and resseruction, it's like aging Christmas was more important than Easter. Actually both are wildly important, and Christmas would have been another birthday without the stone being rolled back. And Easter could never have happened without Him coming. So there are some points of the book where I say "yes and amen while nodding constantly" but other points where I said "wait...what, doesn't that negate what I just agreed with" I suppose no book is comprehensive and as far as "Flesh" and practice of grace it hits a great resounding chorus. As far as a manual for a complete way to minister to people, it may not have all the t's crossed. I liked it and so should you.

Flesh

If you can get past the tattoos and the bar in the living room you will find a very interesting perspective on the incarnation.
I admit I live in a different culture and though I may enjoy a brew now and then I am holding up on the tattoos although I have plenty of surface area. I mention this at the outset because in much of American culture pastors who drink and have tattoos won't get much of hearing from teetotalers. That would be a shame because there is much in the book to think about.

I think people are more willing to be themselves in a pub then in a church which is one of the lessons we can learn from this book.

As I reviewed my notes I found I had highlighted many passages For example, "People are not pagans to be converted. projects to be preached at, or demographics to be reprogrammed". And "If you want a safe faith you will never really know God because he doesn't hang out in the shallow end much...."

There is one point with which I take issue. This quote is found on page 46, "Jesus did not come to convert people. Nowhere did he ever say that was his goal. What we do see is that his primary desire was to give glory to the Father by revealing his glory...."

I certainly agree that Jesus came to glorify the Father. He is clear about that in John 14-17 but Jesus also says in Luke 19:10 "The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost." This sounds like conversion to me. So seeking to convert is not at odds with glorifying God but in fact the way in which Jesus glorifies the Father. This reminds us that incarnation may involve invocation.

The humiliation! cries the boy as he endures school, wondering not only if everyone knows but also how the heck he caught the plague—from a hug? a hat? his dog? (Facts marked with asterisks deliver a bit of additional info: Relax. Dogs don’t get head lice.) The whole grueling removal procedure, from zero-tolerance laundry to medicated oil to a nit comb is depicted, with the combing apocalypse of lice being the most humorous. Falls Short

This book had great potential, but I was disappointed. I don't think it did enough to reinforce the idea that lice can happen to anyone. The child diagnosed with lice in the book expresses feeling ashamed and says he won't have anymore friends, and while I think those are legitimate feelings for a child experiencing head lice to express, the book could have done a better job to assure kids that getting lice is not a social failure. Also, it should be noted that on one page, a louse is depicted smoking a cigar. I was excited to read this book, hoping that it might be something I could share with my students to help destigmatize the lice issue. But I am afraid they will miss the message. The consensus regarding this book seems to be about the same among my colleagues, including a school nurse too. I am a David Shannon fan, but I will not be putting this book out on the shelf.

Shows that everyone can get Head Lice and how hard it is to get rid of. Great book for children and their parents. Great for schools for teaching about Head Lice.

I have been itching to write a review of this book. First the illustrations are humorous and colorful. When plagued by lice besides getting treatment this book will be a good tool to deal with a situation that is total void of humor. I need to get to know other works by David Shannon, this work has great promise.

disorganized mess

While the author has a huge amount of knowledge on the subject matter he clearly has no idea how to create a textbook that flow seemlessly from one topic to the next. I spent all semester jumping back and forth between subjects and topics. The case studies are dull and dry, and for the most part outdated.

It's a good start

I bought the Kindle version of this book for a class that I am taking as part of my masters degree. It has a lot of features that I like such as being able to search and add easy to find notes. The thing that I don't like about it is that the Kindle version does not have everything that the hard copy does. The Kindle version also doesn't have page numbers. When the professor references a certain page in an assignment, it makes it very difficult to know if I am referencing the right material. For the most part I like using a Kindle version but they need to do a better job to make sure that everything is included from the original version.

As far as the actual content of the book is concerned, it is fairly informative. I think the author could do a better job explaining some topics. A lot of the phrasing could be reworded to make the book easier to read.

Good if You Can Suffer Through

Just finished a class taught from this book and I did NOT love trying to learn from it! Ettlie knows TONS but can't seem to organize his thoughts or stay on topic! Clue: he does repeat the same thoughts throughout the book so occasionally you can use later passages to decipher others. He even has two sections by the same name in one chapter - I am not kidding! I don't even think his editor could make it through this one. Lots of great ideas in there but plan many hours reading every single reference to try to figure out his points. That is IF you can find the references, some are quite old and many are flat WRONG, or not completely identified, especially in Chapter 9. Sadly, his reviews as a prof sound about the same. Smart guy but proceed with caution!
