I struggled to rate this. The underlying plot was great but predictable - girl on the run from an abusive husband finds protection with a guy who works in a security firm. Alice has been so abused she no longer speaks. Bad stuff happens, good stuff happens, then an HEA. The hero was good, but I found his character conflict a little too contrived - buddy dies, wife leaves him - so he can never love again because it hurts too much when you lose someone. Her conflict - well, there's the problem. She had been isolated as a child, and then victimized and abused as an adult for 6 years. You would think trust would be her big issue, but no, she trusts Hudson because she heard his voice through the wall and it sounded right to her. Then, she's ready to fall in love in about 4 weeks.
OK, so maybe she should be afraid to socialize because she's been locked in a closet for 6 years. Nope, she's hanging out doing girl stuff and talking girl talk even tho she didn't have a sister and was only out in the world for a year before Erik locked her away for the next 6. So if not that, maybe you'd think it would be her ability to survive in the real world because, well, she's never really lived in the real world - nope, she escapes from the abuser and finds the resources she needs to run away from her very clever abuser for 7 months. How about PTSD? No, Hudson is her therapist - he even gets her to speak again after she hasn't spoken for years. And she willingly jumps into bed with him after never having know a kind moment in bed with anyone. So, the heroine was a massive fail for me.
Many of the secondary characters were interesting, particularly Missy and King, so I will definitely read the next book in the series. I hope the author does a better job of creating credible character conflicts in the next book.

Highly Enjoyable Read!

Tracie Douglas' debut novel Lost in Silence is fantastic.
Not normally a dark romance reader, I highly enjoyed Alice's heartbreaking story of escaping the clutches of a mad man and into the closet of an amazing one.
Alice has basically been held hostage and sold to strangers by who she thought was her husband, but was able to escape one night. On the run, she's been careful but her captor is hot on her heels. Luckkily for her that is when Hudson Rivers and her paths cross.
Hudson is a badass ex-military man who had a darkened past, ghosts from war and losing friends haunt his dreams. He is captivated by the tiny woman who enters her room and hides in the closet of his motel room. Something about her calls to him and captivates him. She sparks a need to protect and shield her he hadn't felt before.
What I enjoyed was the way that Tracie Douglas wrote Alice, who by the way had been trained not to speak by her captor. Douglas does an amazing way of letting the reader know whats going on without getting lost in Alice's inability of verbal communication.
The moment that Alice breaks through her training and finally speaks breaks your heart and gives you hope for her to find her bit of happy.
Overall a great read. I will make a warning that it does hit on dark themes and might be a trigger for some. But the twists and turns and the way that hudson and Alice fall in love, is amazing!
I can not wait for the next book in this particular series!!!

GET LOST IN THE SILENCE!!!

I am so thankful when I am given the opportunity to read a new author. It is always like a treasure discovery for me. Throw in a 5 star rating and I am one happy reader.
There was no feeling of novice with this storyline or characters. Very impressive with all grammatical elements and themes.
Unique and entertaining plot. I stayed entertained and involved from beginning to end. I read quickly so I consider that to be lost in thought. Which to me is what I want when reading.
What does every good storyline need? Roles! Those secondary and primary characters that are placed perfectly. Wow!! Talk about bringing words to life. Loved them..Each one. Now I might not have liked everyone. But--there were attributes to be appreciated for every individual.
Grab some Kleenex. So many emotions fill this one. The writing and storytelling just bring the feelings to the surface. The connection is so real.
I absolutely can not suggest this one enough. An overall magnificent book. I guarantee I will be reading the next. AndreaGAH ( ARC)
