Gr 4-6-These books open with an introduction in the voice of the subject of the biography, followed by "People You Will Meet" and a chronology. Next, several chapters outline the main events in the subjects' lives', and end with "10 Things You Should Know About" and "10 MORE Things That Are Pretty Cool to Know." In Washington, readers get broad strokes regarding the man's childhood and years at Mount Vernon, and then follow the time line into his military career. Specific moments in his career and in American history are highlighted, often in sidebars. Sacagawea follows the same format, beginning with the young woman's life with the Lemhi Shoshone and including her capture and subsequent sale by the Hidasta. Her role as interpreter for Lewis and Clark is shown as important to the success of their journey. Both books have sketchlike illustrations throughout. One drawback in these volumes is in the design. The placement of text boxes often interrupts the flow of the text and leads to some flipping back and forth to get all of the information. For example, a box outlining Washington's prowess in math but failure in spelling is placed mid-sentence, leaving readers to either abandon the sentence about his brother or flip back once it is read. The time lines are oriented horizontally, rather than vertically. The overall effect of these design choices detracts from the presentations. The "Who Was" series (Grosset & Dunlap) may be a better first choice for school libraries.-Stacy Dillon, LREI, New York Cityα(c) Copyright 2011. My Daughter LOVES This Series
By Terri T.
My daughter has dyslexia and other learning difficulties, so trying to get her to read can be like pulling teeth. She came home last week with a book in this new series "I am Harriet Tubman" and had already read 1/2 the book in school and finished the rest that night. This is HUGE for her! She asked me to get her more in the series, so I ordered two more, they came super fast, and she is already almost done with the second book in just 3 days. I will be ordering the other ones in the series and hope they come out with more. My daughter reads on mid 2nd grade level, which would be a 7 1/2-8 year old level (she is 9 1/2) just for reference for anyone else wondering what age these are good for.

history made easy
By Melissa Sack
This is the second book in Scholastic's new biography series. This takes us back in time to 1895 on the Lewis and Clark expedition. This will give children a look at what life what like back then. They can read about the hardships as well as the victories that the crew faced as they traveled along.
The only thing that we did not like about this book was the illustrations and charts that were inserted randomly into the test. It broke up the flow of the book. We felt that they should have been placed in the back of the book instead of in the middle of the chapters.

It gave me a lot of cool information
By Adam B
This book taught me how hard it was for Sacagawea. It takes a lot of courage to complete the expedition. I thought the book was awesome! (Written by ABB, age 9)
