Disappointing

I was very disappointed in this prequel. I love Supernatural and was looking forward to John's story, but this just seemed incongruent with the series. John's characterization was especially off. I know that he didn't start out as a tough hunter- but he did start out as a tough ex-Marine. In the comic, they act like he's never been in a fight before, which is ridiculous and not in synch with the series. They also have inserts that jump years into the future and feature the boys. Not only do they disrupt the flow of John's story, but Dean's characterization is way off. They have a moment where he is going to run away, leaving Sam behind. I honestly don't think that Dean would ever even consider that. Plus, he was at an age where I thought that he already knew that his father was a hunter, but in the comic he's ignorant. It just didn't make sense and doesn't jive with my image of what their childhood was like. If I could, I'd unread it. My advice: Skip it.

Interesting prequel

Just finished this TPB, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I'm never thrilled by Mignola-esque artwork, but I am betting that it actually served a purpose: to avoid licensing the likenesses of the actors. That aside, the story is quite good with many different creepy monsters/tones/settings. I'm betting that hard core fans of the show will dig it, and I bet you could enjoy it even if you have never watched the show. With so few horror comics out there on a regular basis... it's a nice break from the spandex monotony. Overall, a welcome addition to the SUPERNATURAL canon! Also recommended: Supernatural: Nevermore (Supernatural) (I have yet to read Witches Canyon, but my wife enjoyed it.) Supernatural: Witch's Canyon (Supernatural)

Not much to see here!

As a fan of the television series, I was hoping this would be more fun. While I love the high stakes, dramatic action, and eerie elements of the show, the sense of humor between Sam and Dean helps keep the show fresh. Here is a tale of their father we get none of that. The plot was pretty by the book and made John, who we know to be intelligent, look ignorant. While I understand he grew into the character we knew this is a huge learning curve then. The art was decent but not fantastic. Overall this book doesn't really do anything new or that well. It's a book that can be skipped.

About the Author

Mike Geig is both an experienced teacher and game developer, with a foot firmly in both camps. He is currently teaches game design and development at Stark State College and the Cleveland Institute of Art. Mike also works as a screencaster for Unity Technologies and is a member of Unity’s Learn department. His Pearson video, Game Development Essentials with Unity 4 LiveLessons, is a key title on Unity. Mike was once set on fire and has over a million “likes” on Facebook.

Great teaching guide. Really can learn the basics of Unity in just a few hours

I was amazed that after just a few hours of reading this book, studying the examples, and following the step-by-step exercise I had a fully functioning 3D game. Incredible.

The chapters broken into easily digestible concepts and the instructions are easy to understand and implement. The first six chapters of the book concentrate on designing your 3D world in Unity. You learn about coordinate systems (XYZ axes), how to create objects and color, texture, and shade them. A few chapters are devoted to creating the game's terrain or landscape. You learn how to sculpt them, how to texture and color them, how to add things like trees, grass and a sky, water, how to add lighting effects. Actually my only criticism of the book it that too much time was spent on terrains too early in the book. I kept thinking - lets create a game....

But in Chapter 7 we did create a game using the cool terrain created in chapters 4-6. And the Amazing Racer game was pretty amazing. Amazing that I could create some that intricate looking in just a few minutes.

In the next part of the book you learn about scripting. C# scripting in particular. I spent a few years programing GIS systems in Java so I found the scripting part pretty straight-forward. But if you have never programmed in an object-orientated language, the next few chapters might get confusing. Complex concepts like Classes, Methods, Functions, Inheritance, Instantiating are touched on, but because of the scope of the book the author is not able to cover them in detail. But all of the C# code is documented in the book, or you can download the files from the website.

By the end of the book you setup three more games and cover a lot more gaming topics. When I finished the final chapter I actually felt ready to create a Unity game of my own design. I know there are a million other things that I have to learn, but this book taught me the basics and gave me the confidence to dive into the world of Unity.

PS: The games were created using Unity engine version 4.1 and 4.2, but the current Unity version is 4.3. For the most part everything is the same, but I did have a few problems copying things like complete Scenes and Animations directly from the author's downloadable examples into my 4.3 Unity folders (the animations just wouldn't run). I found it best to copy the complete 4.1/4.2 games to my computer and then allow Unity to upgrade them from 4.1/4.2 to 4.3. Once I did that I could copy the Scenes and Animations from the author's folders to my folders without any glitches.

So thanks Mr. Geig, I learned a lot from the book, and now I am ready to take on Unity.

Good - for what it is.

It's good. However 4.3 is out which has 2d defaults. The ui has changed a bit, so if you are learning unity you'll have to filter all of that out. These "cram" books are a good crash course, but you'll need A LOT more to get the most of unity. Again, great to get up and running but not much more.

Great Into to Unity

This book takes a confusing and more than occaisionally frustrating and complex product and breaks it into pieces we can all understand, I tried one of the other books getting through Unity 3,x and it was a no-go. This book helps me as the instructor and my students, a group of really smart 8 - 14 year olds.

Unity integrates with mechanim and lots of other cool stuff and the book teaches how to import and use assets as effectively possible in a 3D environment, The book is broken into logical units and the source code for examples is easily downloadable, I recommend the Kindle version as it can be with you at all times as a guide and reference,

Very cute

Definitely dated. His outlooks on gender roles are so quaint that they are somehow endearing. He leaves the right-hand pages blank so we can write in our own opinions and do better ("if that's possible").

For what Leedskalnin is known - the Coral Castle in Florida - it's interesting to have a peek at his opinions on personal, social and economic morals and norms - brings the man into the warmth of the hearth rather than having a look at him "at arm's length" for his enigmatic genius. I wouldn't argue his social standards or his inflexible stance on social responsibility. I would just nod and accept them as his own and then go about my own business.

Certainly a novel perspective by one of our contemporary geniuses, and a quick read.

This book is really interesting the author encoded some message and parallelism with eletromagnetism and coils building inside his writings... Its little weird for the people who read it in a literal way. But this book is hidding something more.

A partial history of the Screaming Eagles

This history came from many interviews, diary entries, letters, and the like. The authors compiled the information to make it as readable as possible. Included with the history are photos and correspondence (like the memorable "NUTS" note during Bastogne). The goal is to provide a history of the 101st Airborne Division.

The book is very WWII heavy. More than half of the book deals with that. From its conception to its initial deactivation, the reader can walk through the different actions to get an idea of what the soldiers were going through. Some battles are very detailed and put the reader in the action. Others, like the respite between battles, are not covered in as much detail, but there is enough there to understand what the soldier did with his time.

After the reactivation, the books is very quick. There are some photographs, but nothing that really seems new. The narrative seems to have stopped in the 60s even though the division is still around. If I had to find a flaw, that would be it. One of the authors notes working on this manuscript in 1946, so it is very possible that he is not writing anymore. Ideally, another writer should write the history from the reactivation to now.

As a narrative, the book shows what is happening quite well; however, this is military history. There is a host of names and numbers that keep the casual reader from really following the book. The narrative is geared towards military buffs.

For those military buffs, I would recommend this book to get an inside view of this division's work during WWII. Not only does the book provide information on Bastogne, but also Normandy and the other campaigns.

Rendezvous With Destiny is to the 101st Airborne Division as All American - All The Way (Phil Nordyke) is to the 82nd Airborne Division. Both books are the complete and ultimate source of information for their respective divisions.

Rendezvous With Destiny represents an important contribution to the collection of historical information, data and recollections of individuals who fought with the 101st. Because of the nature of airborne operations as well as the high casualty rates, reconstructing battles after the fact is extremely difficult and demanding. In many cases, it's impossible. That's why this work is of such historical significance. It does not read like an Ian Fleming novel but its also not Shakespeare. Its not a dry reference book either. It's a very readable and highly detailed account of some of the bravest fighting men who ever donned an American soldier's uniform!

Included in the 800 pages are numerous photographs, over one hundred maps, a glossary of terms and abbreviations, an honor roll, a list of foreign citations, decorations and battle honors, a collection of airborne songs and poems and authorized strength and casualty lists.

Rendezvous With Destiny was an indispensable reference source in the research for my own historical novel of World War II airborne operations in Europe.

Rendezvous With Destiny

Leonard Rappaport and Arthur Norwood served in the 101st Airborne during World War II. Somehow it came to them to write down the history of that division during the time that they served in it, from 1942 to 1945. They did this to preserve the memory of those who served and came home, and for those who would never come home again. They made sure that the people involved get the credit that they deserved, unstinting in their praise where warranted, yet unafraid of discussing the less than successful moments (thankfully few).

Years later, with less personal involvement, they added a section on the 101st in Vietnam. While not as all encompassing as the WWII section, it is still enlightening as well as entertaining. For a couple of gentlemen who were not professional writers, I find their style to be interesting and informative.

My interest is primarily in the WWII aspect of the book, though I found the Vietnam section to also be telling. If I could give half stars, this would be four and one half stars. Recommended.
